Avoiding Drama (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

When I see any variation of “no drama” on someone's social media profile, I assume they're full of drama. You create your own drama in life, so if you're tired of it, you're doing it to yourself. Stop hitting yourself and take ten steps toward a less stressful life.

1. Do Not Give Unsolicited Advice

I'm sure you know exactly how to solve everyone's problems. You could end world hunger, close the income gap, and bring about world peace on your own. The reality is that you have no idea what you're talking about, and even if you do, nobody cares unless they ask you directly. Keep your advice to yourself, and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble.

2. Recognize Your Limits

People have a proclivity to over-commit. When you have too many commitments, you won't be able to devote your full attention to all of them. Things fall by the wayside, and no matter how hard you try, you become a flake. If you continue to fall short of people's expectations, they will all turn “against” you, and you will be surrounded by drama.

3. Take Care of Your Beeswax

It is acceptable to socialize with others, but keep your nose out of other people's affairs. If the treatment of whistleblowers like Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning have taught us anything, it is that when their secrets are leaked, people become overly dramatic. Keep your head down and mind your own business to avoid the drama.

4. Be Open and Honest

Lies are annoying because they clutter your mind with extraneous information. When you lie to people, you cause unnecessary drama that could have been avoided. It's a conscious decision you're making to lie, and the lies will come to light sooner or later. By speaking honestly, you can avoid the drama of covering up the truth and the drama of being caught lying.

5. Concentrate on Yourself

You won't notice the drama if you're focused on getting ahead in your goals. You'll be so focused on your own future that all the drama will fade into the background. It becomes as important to you as the plight of starving children in Africa and abused pets, as Sarah McLachlan sings about.

6. Master the Art of Saying No

People will bombard you with questions. If you're asked if you know something, you should say no. Don't try to say it in a way they know you know but can't in order to make you feel important or special – just deny it. Do not become involved. It's as simple as that. And don't respond if someone you don't want to talk to texts you with drama. They'll grow tired of it sooner or later.

7. Put an End to Gossip

I'm not a gossip, but Sandy told John she overheard Bill and Katie discussing how Frank is. It's a two-way street when it comes to gossip. It's all well and good to tell everyone about how someone else gossips, but doing so automatically qualifies you as a gossip. The listener is also a gossip. You don't get to blame your flaws on others in order to absolve yourself of responsibility.

8. Laughter

When you smile, you instantly become the focal point of the room. You find yourself in the driver's seat. If people come to you with drama, you can redirect the conversation. They'll follow you because you appear more self-assured. If they do not, you are free to ignore them and walk away. There will be no more drama.

9. Show Compassion

A lot of so-called “drama” in life is actually caused by how you react. People have problems, and they need to vent from time to time. Everyone complains, and you can be sympathetic to all of them. As a courtesy, it is possible to listen to people's problems. You don't have to actually listen if you don't want to, but you should give the impression that you are. It's a one-time occurrence, and if it bothers you, you can avoid it the next time.

10. Meditate

There will always be drama in life – it is unavoidable. Instead of allowing it to affect you, meditate. There will never be a fairy tale “happily ever after” life where everything is simple. Every one of us, rich and poor, young and old, big and small, has problems. The grass on both sides of the fence needs to be watered, weeded, and mowed on a regular basis.

Suck it up…
