1. A Trustworthy Best Friend

Sometimes the only thing you need to stay sane is a devoted best friend. Everyone requires a nonjudgmental friend who will always be there for them. This is the type of friend who allows you to be a hot mess and knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets while still loving you.

2. A Daring Adventurer

We live in a big world with a lot of places to see, people to meet, and experiences to have, but so many of us get stuck in our own routines and forget to, well, live. We all need an adventurous friend to push us out of our comfort zones and introduce us to new ideas, cultures, philosophies, and activities.

3. An Embarrassingly Honest Confidant

There are times in life when we need to hear the harsh reality. That is the purpose of the brutally honest confidant. If you're in a rocky relationship and everyone tells you that it's perfectly normal to be back with that special someone for the eighth time in the last two years, the brutally honest confidant is there to yank your rose-colored glasses off and say, “Enough.” Stop with the break-up and re-union nonsense. You are entitled to better.” Friends are expected to be truthful with one another. If you find someone who is brutally honest with you (in a constructive way), keep them! If you have someone in your life who is smart, inspiring, and admirable and practices this philosophy, consider yourself extremely fortunate. We all need a friend who motivates us to be better people without making us feel insufficient. Furthermore, being around such a person will push us to improve ourselves on a daily basis.

The wise mentor in your life does not have to be someone with whom you share the same occupation or hobbies. It's simply someone who is a few steps ahead of you in life and has the wisdom and patience to steer you in the right direction. It can be anyone — a coworker, a friend who is wise beyond their years, or an elderly neighbor — as long as you admire them and aspire to be more like them.

5. A Culturally Diverse Friend

The last thing you want to be known for is being someone who is set in their ways. The world would be a much better place if everyone had a friend from a different culture. Being in a cross-cultural friendship allows you to learn about customs, values, and traditions from cultures other than your own. You might even try new things now and then.

Be cautious; don't make friends with someone simply because they come from a different culture. Nobody wants to be a token friend. Instead, keep an open mind, and if you connect with someone from a different culture, make an effort to learn about their customs, values, and traditions while getting to know the person on a personal level.

We humans are hard-wired to band together in groups and attack outsiders — call it the human pack mentality. If you only form friendships with people who share your beliefs, customs, and values, chances are you're disconnected from the rest of the world, and you're more likely to perpetuate stereotypes on anyone who holds a different world view than you.

Instead of constantly surrounding yourself with people who share your beliefs, try to get out of your comfort zone and make friends with people who hold opposing views. They will assist in opening your eyes to different world views, and you will learn to accept people who do not see the world in the same way that you do.

7. A Helpful Neighbor

Many people nowadays don't even know who their neighbors are. It's a shame because some of your neighbors can be the nicest and most helpful people you've ever met. If you're on vacation and realize you forgot to lock the front door, you can call a neighbor and ask them to come over to your house and lock it for you. Nice, dependable neighbors who look out for each other are a dying breed, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't introduce yourself to the new neighbors across the street!

8. A Colleague at Work

Did you know that if you work full-time, you spend at least half of your waking hours at work? Not only that, but you spend some of your personal time commuting to work, thinking about work, working overtime, and furthering your career. Isn't it depressing?

According to statistics, the more isolated you are at work, the more depressed you become. That's why it's a good idea to find a coworker to chat with at the water cooler and help you get through the week. You and your coworker both spend 50% of your waking hours at work. It will be far easier to shoot the breeze and complain about work with someone who can relate to you than it will be to eat lunch alone every day.

Your coworker does not have to be your best friend outside of the workplace. They simply need to be someone with whom you connect on some level, and if you two get along particularly well, you can always start hanging out with them outside of the office.

You're bound to live a long and happy life if you have a loyal best friend, a fearless adventurer, a brutally honest confidant, a wise mentor, a friend from another culture, a polar opposite, a friendly neighbor, and a work pal in your life!
