Do you look forward to going to work every day? Is your stomach churning just thinking about what you've got to do today? Are you constantly irritated with people at work or with your family as a result of what is going on at work? You may feel trapped in a job because you need to earn a certain amount of money or because there are no other jobs available in the area.

Consider these signs if you aren't sure but believe it is time for you or a loved one to leave your current job.

1. You require caffeine at all times

Do you find yourself daydreaming about doing other things all the time? Do you find it difficult to concentrate on your work without a cup of coffee or an energy drink? Caffeine is a stimulant that, if used excessively, can give you a false sense of enthusiasm for your work. If you find yourself needing a cup of coffee just to get through the next hour, you should think about changing jobs.

2. You are unconcerned about the quality of your work

You're just going through the motions, aren't you? Do you lack zeal? According to Lynn Taylor, author of Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant (TOT): How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior, if you are not passionate about your job, you will never achieve your full potential. If you're thinking about leaving, try to stay focused and enthusiastic until you do. This will help you in the future with references and employment.

3. You are obnoxious about checking your email

This indicates that you are constantly on the lookout for new distractions. If you are constantly checking your email, Facebook, or other social media, you are not paying attention to the task at hand and should look for a job where you will be able to focus.

4. You are constantly in pain, or believe you are

Do you have a nagging ache that won't go away? Do you have a slight ache in your back? Or are you constantly on your feet and can't get your mind off that nagging pain? If you have a physically demanding job that is causing serious health problems, you may need to consider changing jobs to save your health. On the other hand, if you find yourself constantly noticing minor aches and pains, this could be a new distraction that is keeping you from doing your job.

5. You eat for pleasure or for solace

Are you looking forward to lunch just so you can eat at the hip new restaurant around the corner? Do you keep a few snacks in your desk drawer? Constantly attempting to slip away to your car or the break room in order to consume another muffin or bag of chips? You might be looking for satisfaction at the bottom of the chip bag, but you won't find it. Eating pleasurable foods releases endorphins, which can make us feel good, but if you can't cope with your job without resorting to comfort food, you may have to quit—and get a new gym membership. Instead, go for a walk during lunch. Walking also releases endorphins, and it will be a better way to deal with needing a boost during the day until you can find a new job.

6. You can't seem to put the phone down

Sometimes in our jobs, we need to keep our phone nearby, especially if we are on call or working on an important project. However, if you can't even put your phone down during a party or class with people you like, you might need to look for a new job. Everyone, including workaholics, requires downtime. You need to spend time with your friends and family to unwind, clear your mind, and have some fun. If you are constantly expected to be “on,” you should look for a new job.

7. You are constantly at odds with coworkers

Is everything your coworkers say incorrect? Do you often find yourself working with the most obnoxious and unreasonable people? They might be thinking the same thing about you! If this is the case, you may want to start looking for another job. Whether it's a personality clash or you simply don't believe the people in your job understand important issues, you might want to look for a job where you don't have to deal with so many people—or perhaps you can be the boss.

8. You're dreading Sunday night

Are you looking forward to Sunday night because it means you'll have to get up early the next day to go to work? If you find yourself panicking about having to go to work the next day, you may need to assess the nature of the problem. Perhaps a new job is in order, or perhaps you should start doing activities that relax you to help you get rid of that dread.

9. Your company is in trouble

Perhaps you enjoy your job, but the company as a whole is failing. I once worked for a failing publication, and it got to the point where I was surprised each morning when I arrived and the door wasn't locked. Don't go down with the ship if you're worried about losing your job soon, Taylor advises. Go find a new job before you have to compete with all of your former coworkers.

The bottom line is that if you can't find a reason to go to work every day—including the paycheck—you should look for another job. There are numerous avenues for discovering and pursuing a lucrative passion. Give classes. Create a book. Experiment with something new.
