The human desire to achieve more is universal, as is the feeling of being defeated. Things don't always go as planned, and we end up feeling beaten down and, in some cases, downtrodden.

There are (sadly) many practical examples, ranging from quitting a bad habit (did anyone say Netflix binge on a Tuesday night?) to overcoming adversity. or even an addiction to dealing with a boss you despise who makes every day seem endless. Other issues may be making you feel like Sisyphus, the Greek god who was forced to push a massive rock up a hill for eternity as a punishment, doing the hard work but not being rewarded.

Fortunately, we've discovered some fantastic examples of ‘defeated' people who made a remarkable comeback, demonstrating that character is just as important as talent. Winston Churchill is one of those individuals. Most of us are aware that he saved his country and possibly the rest of the world during World War II, but we often forget that he famously stated, “I am finished,” almost 20 years earlier—when he was 40.

He'd lost the battle of Gallipoli, and everything seemed to point to him going down in history as the rest of us: unknown. However, his plan to return to the forefront of politics was successful (only to lose the election after the war, and then win again). He was defeated, but he was able to recover.

There are other examples of leaders who have faced adversity and then made an incredible comeback. Abraham Lincoln is well-known as a former US president, but few people are aware that he was defeated in elections for the United States House of Representatives just a few years before that. Napoleon Bonaparte was Europe's emperor, only to be exiled (and then come back and then go into exile again).

Most of us do not rule Europe or the United States, but you get the point: you win some, you lose some, and you should never give up on your goals and dreams. This isn't limited to famous historical figures. When the human spirit is at its weakest and in need of strengthening, it is measured.

Personally, I went through a tragedy when my father died in front of me when I was 25. Less than an hour later, while in the hospital, I told myself that nothing would break me, and I set out on a journey to save other people's lives through Safe Lane, a non-profit I founded to prevent car accidents. What we do, rather than what happens to us, defines us. Who we are is defined by how we deal with feeling defeated.

It is not your fault that you are feeling defeated

According to research, feeling defeated is not your fault. Research has validated the deep-seated sense of defeat. For example, studies of animal species with dominance hierarchies revealed that animals who lost in non-lethal fighting showed signs of depression. Other research suggests that feelings of defeat and entrapment are linked to depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, it also happens to humans.

According to research, it disproportionately affects the poor. Over half of the people in a study conducted in economically deprived areas of England felt defeated. They had a sense of being suffocated.

The study also established a link between anxiety and depression, demonstrating that this feeling negatively impacts the mental health of those living in less affluent areas. The clear link between where you live and how you feel is disheartening, as it shows that some populations are predisposed to suffering more than others.

The good news is that there are some pretty good solutions for dealing with this horrible feeling. Some can provide immediate relief, while others can help within a few weeks.

Take three minutes once a day to write down two things you're grateful for. It may appear to be a childish thing to do, but keeping a gratitude journal has been scientifically proven to be beneficial. Making a mental note of the good things in your life increases your appreciation for them, and this type of positive thinking also helps your brain change patterns.

According to a Berkeley study, students who wrote a gratitude letter to their peers had “significantly better mental health 4 weeks and 12 weeks after the writing exercise ended.” This suggests that gratitude writing can be beneficial not only for healthy, well-adjusted people, but also for those suffering from mental health issues.”

Martin Seligman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, demonstrated that taking the time to write about the good things in their lives resulted in a significant increase in happiness scores.

2. Take frequent breaks

It can sometimes feel good to work too hard because you're pushing your limits. Nonetheless, you can't work if you don't take breaks. There have been a few studies that show that your energy is limited.

Numerous studies have found that “taking a break can be very beneficial for you and your work.” Micro-breaks, lunchtime breaks, and longer breaks have all been shown to improve employee well-being and productivity. You can improve your performance by taking regular breaks.”

This has been extremely beneficial to me. Every problem you're facing has already been solved by someone else, so take a cue from them. Having a mentor relieves stress and assists you in both practically understanding how to handle the situation and emotionally putting things into perspective. I used to be a skeptic, but I've discovered that it's beneficial to meditate when you need a break. Numerous studies have shown that breathing helps to build resilience. Our bodies recognize when it is time to relax simply by breathing slowly and deeply.

We are living in a time when we are feeling overwhelmed. We have too much on our plates, and sometimes we are in a position that does not allow us to solve the problem at hand right away.

Don't worry—by meditating, breathing, or simply attempting to relax, you can understand what to do by allowing your mind to think and improve. You wouldn't be reading this if you weren't interested!

5. Your self-talk is more important than ever before

Our thoughts and beliefs can be discouraging at times. Many people have a negativity bias, which means they are more likely to notice negative thoughts and emotions than positive or neutral ones. This is where positive self-talk comes into play.

Using self-talk to assess whether your perceptions are beneficial to you and whether they are an accurate representation of reality can help you realize that things may not be as bad as you think. According to research, this is frequently the case.

The radical acceptance approach is one way to think about it from a psychological standpoint, and it's pretty self-explanatory. It means you should accept what happened and instead consider what you should do next.

Healthy eating and staying hydrated go a long way. Sleeping for more than 7 hours per night is also extremely beneficial to your physical and mental well-being.
