Is it having a proper balance between your personal and professional lives, or is it more about being able to make quick decisions? Control is defined differently by each individual, and every now and then, we let that control slip through our fingers.

When that control slips, we have two choices: grab it again or completely let go, resulting in a domino effect
Consider Tom as an example of a domino effect
Tom has a great job and regularly goes to the gym. He eats well-balanced meals, and while he isn't a dieter, he is conscious of what he puts into his body. He has a loving wife at home and has taken up photography as a hobby outside of work because it brings him joy.
Now, Tom has recently been assigned a project at work that is causing him stress. He's been eating his lunch at his desk, and it's usually whatever he can get his hands on. He disconnected from his social circle, rescheduled his anniversary dinner with his wife, and stopped going to the gym entirely. He tells himself, “I'll make it up when this is finished,” and continues to concentrate solely on the task at hand.
Tom's project is completed months later, and he receives a well-deserved award for his efforts. Despite his sense of accomplishment, Tom is dissatisfied. His social circles have planned a gathering without him, he's gained several pounds from neglecting his diet and the gym, and even though he makes up the anniversary dinner with his wife, she no longer appears genuinely interested.
The moral of this story is that when we begin to neglect or ignore the things and people who matter to us, even if only temporarily, things usually feel out of control. You may be wondering how to get my life back on track at this point. It's also about realizing that once you let one thing go, it'll be easier to let other things go, causing you to feel off-kilter.
If this occurs, there are steps you can take to get back on track, break bad habits, and live your life.
1. Do a Life Audit Life audits can help you start paying attention to different aspects of your life, such as your career, intimate relationships, family relationships, emotional well-being, health, finances, spirituality, and creativity. When it comes to getting your life back on track, it's best to start with an assessment of where you are right now.
There are numerous versions of the life audit, and the key is to find a method that works for you. While some people prefer to work on a diagram, also known as the Wheel of Life[2,] others would rather answer a series of questions. When things start to feel out of control, it's usually a sign from the universe that you need to check in with yourself to get back on track. When life takes over and the busyness sets in, we sometimes overlook important and vital areas, causing us to sacrifice our health and overcompensate our time and energy in relationships and things that aren't serving us.
If you want to learn how to get your life back on track, the first step is to assess your happiness in these major life areas. Successful people are those who can be honest with themselves about the areas of their lives that require the most improvement.
2. Regain Your Confidence Confidence is the foundation of how you show up every day and over time. Showing up entails more than simply getting up and going to work; it entails showing up with a plan for the day.
When things get out of hand, it's because you lack physical and mental clarity. Although confidence may appear to be an intangible quality to grasp, it is far more accessible than you believe.
Consider what gives you confidence and look for things that correspond to that. Commit to fitness if you want to feel good about your body. If it's knowledge, learn from those you admire or contact a mentor you'd like to work with.
You will feel more in control of your life once you have control over how you show up every day.
3. Carry out a Brain Dump On average, we have 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day. While it is impossible to keep track of every single thought that crosses our mind, there is still an uncontrollable list that flows into our consciousness, which can get in the way of knowing how to get back on track.
Some of these thoughts may inspire or excite you, while others may cause stress or feelings of overwhelm, which can make it difficult to get your life back on track. Eventually, a long list appears, including things to do, daily chores, errands, people to see, project ideas, and so on. Brain dumping helps declutter the mind and provides an opportunity to put all those ideas and thoughts on paper in order to get back on track. You now have more room to focus because you have freed up some of that space.
Take 15-20 minutes of brain dumping the next time you're feeling overwhelmed or like things are spinning out of control. This isn't supposed to be a structured exercise. Instead, go with the flow and write whatever comes to mind.
After that, you can start going through your notes and categorizing them.
4. Organize the Minor Details When you feel like you have no control over the major events in your life, remember that you do have control over the things that surround you – literally. This includes having control over how clean your house is, how organized your drawers are, if you eat healthy, how much money you spend, how often you see family and friends, and so on. The little things add up and can help you feel like you're regaining control of your life while also reducing stress. 5. Define Your Purpose Identifying or redefining your purpose is a seed that needs to be planted within you. This is, in fact, the foundation of developing your motivation.
Dive into self-awareness to help identify or define your purpose, which is at the heart of who you are. Even in severe weather, trees tend to stand firm, regardless of how strong the wind or rain is. When you define your purpose, you are laying a solid foundation for yourself.
When things appear to be spiraling out of control, remember your purpose and the joy it brings you. Allow that to ground you as you work to get your life back on track.
6. Examine Your Time Management Time management is a life skill that takes years to perfect. There's nothing wrong with wanting to work on multiple projects at the same time, but as with everything else, moderation and portion sizes are key. If you want to get your life back on track, assess your day and see how much of your time and energy goes into certain areas and activities.
I once had a client who worked two jobs. She was constantly exhausted and stressed because she didn't have any time to herself. She had only one day off, and it took a toll on her emotionally, mentally, and even physically.
I had asked her to keep track of how much time she spent doing various activities, such as work, recreation, and errands, for a week. After physically writing it down, we discovered that her work required 75 hours of her time per week, with an additional 14 hours spent commuting. She only slept for about 5 hours a night and ran errands in between work shifts, leaving her with only one day to spend with family.
The next step was to evaluate how much time she had spent and whether working two jobs was worth the mental and physical exhaustion. Following that, we determined how much she could realistically earn.
After gaining a better understanding of the situation, I asked her if it was worthwhile to continue working two jobs. She said no. Sometimes it's necessary to break things down and see where your time is spent, with whom, and whether it's aligned with your needs.
7. Don't Be Too Hard on Yourself When things seem to be going against us, we can put too much pressure on ourselves to get our lives back on track right away, which can have a negative impact on our mental health.
Although there is no one-size-fits-all solution for learning how to get your life back on track overnight, understand that it is a series of steps toward a specific goal.
Consistency and patience are required to establish routines. Actions involving the letter “re” – redoing, reinventing, or reassessing – mean to do something again or differently. Recognize that this process takes time, and perhaps time is what you require first.
The Bottom Line When life seems to be spinning out of control, it's a good time to take a step back and reassess where we are in life. When things begin to fall apart all at once, it is often an indication that we have lost the balance that serves as the center of our lives.
