In life, we all have to do things we don't want to do. For me, it's laundry, cooking, and working out; for others, it's something else. Some of these things must be done on a daily basis, while others are long-term objectives. However, it is critical for all of us to learn how to do something we do not want to do.

How do you find the willpower to do those dreaded activities in your life in a world where everyone seems to be a procrastinator? Do you frequently find yourself saying, “I can't seem to get myself to do anything”? If this is the case, it is most likely a problem with your motivation or willpower.

1. Confront Your Fear

Doing things you don't want to do isn't always motivated by fear (think cooking or laundry), but it is in many cases. What if you have to give a big presentation, but you'd rather take a bullet to the head than speak in front of a group?

Many of the things you must do can lead to personal development. Face your fears head on and you will become a better person. Remember that the more you do something, the easier it becomes, but you must stop putting it off and simply finish the task.

2. Consider the Long-Term Consequences

Assume you are aware that you need to eat healthier and exercise more. Procrastination is only hurting you in this case. The longer you wait, the worse your body will get, but you don't know what to do when you don't want to do anything.

It's easy to get stuck in your comfort zone, but staying in your comfort zone has a negative impact on your future. As a result, the key is to think long term.

When you want to learn how to do something you don't want to do, consider how your actions (or lack thereof) today will affect you tomorrow or in 10-20 years.

Maybe your spouse has been nagging you for a long time to clean up your huge pile of junk in the kitchen, and the reason the junk pile is there is because you despise dealing with the details of paper, mail, and all the other random stuff that has accumulated there.

In this case, putting off cleaning is most likely causing resentment in your relationship. Your inaction not only affects him/her, but also the overall quality of your relationship. It's best to put up with the unpleasant task for someone you care about, especially if it's not causing you any emotional or physical harm.

4. Divide It Up Into Smaller Steps

Sometimes the tasks at hand appear so daunting and overwhelming that you don't know where to begin. When this happens, you end up doing and achieving nothing.

Before I started my Ph.D. program, the idea of writing a dissertation of several hundred pages seemed impossible. However, once I reframed it and saw it as a collection of shorter “papers,” it didn't seem so bad. When you're trying to figure out how to do something you don't want to do, breaking it down into smaller tasks can be extremely helpful.

5. Don't try to do everything all at once

If you need to clean out that junk pile, don't feel obligated to do it all in one sitting. Any effort toward your ultimate goal counts as progress. Even if you're working on a degree or filing your taxes, every little bit helps.

Allow yourself to take the time necessary to complete the task correctly. At the same time, this does not imply that you have an infinite amount of time; you must persevere and refuse to give up. Also, don't put it off until the last minute because this will force you to do it all at once.

6. Steps should be prioritized

Once you've mapped out the small steps, prioritize them based on what's most important. What is the most pressing and least pressing need? If you've been putting off paying your bills, make sure you pay the ones that are due soon first.

As obvious as it may sound, many people do not prioritize in this manner. Even if you're procrastinating about cleaning your house, start with the room you believe is the dirtiest.

7. Schedule the steps on a calendar

Whether you use a physical or digital calendar, take the time to write down your tasks on specific days so that when you wake up in the morning and look at what you have to do that day, you can see them. When this occurs, you are more likely to complete them because they are on your daily to-do list.

You'll feel more motivated when you can cross something off your to-do list, which may help keep you on track as you learn how to do something you don't want to do.

8. Keep in Mind the End Goal

Some goals do not produce immediate results, and these are the most difficult to begin with. If you need to lose 50 pounds, you won't see much movement on the scale for the first week or two.

It's easy to become discouraged when you don't see the results of your efforts, but keep going. Remember how good it will feel when you reach your goal.

This process can be aided by visualization. Consider how you want your end result to look and feel.

9. Be grateful for what you have to do

If you're complaining about having to clean your house, do your laundry, pay your bills, or cook, remember how fortunate you are to have a house, clothes, food, and money to pay for it all. Not every activity is enjoyable, but you can always find something to appreciate in whatever you have to do.

10. Give Yourself a Treat

When you're finished with your task, treat yourself to a hot fudge sundae or a long, hot bath with some wine. It's wonderful to spoil yourself, and when you decide to reward yourself after you've completed what you don't want to do, it will serve as a stronger incentive to complete it!

Our days will not always be filled with our preferred pastimes. You sometimes have to learn how to do something you don't want to do. It all comes down to motivation and adopting the appropriate perspective for a given task.
