Preparing yourself for failure

Have you ever considered that there could be a very good reason why you aren't completing some of your to-do list items? That's right – we frequently assign ourselves tasks that we don't truly believe in and have little value to us, and then we wonder why we never complete them!

Running a full-fledged assessment is one of the simplest ways to make your to-do list more manageable. Is it fair to include every item on the list? Or can you cross a few items off your list knowing that, in the grand scheme of things, it won't have much of an impact on your life?

Another mistake people make is prioritizing the most important tasks of others. Make sure you ask yourself who has a task on your list – is it really important to YOU, or has someone close to you made you feel like it should be important – when it isn't. Never assume that what is important to others should automatically be important to you!

Concentrate on the value and outcome

Before you commit to any of the tasks on your list, consider their worth. It is difficult to motivate ourselves if we focus on the task itself; however, if we focus on the outcome or result of the task, it is much easier to get excited and power through, knowing it will all be worthwhile in the end.

Get rid of any apprehension you may have about the tasks – is there something holding you back from starting? Fear of failure often prevents us from trying new things, so it's a good idea to change your attitude toward this.

Get comfortable with the concept of failure, knowing that it only serves to propel us forward on the path to success. Consider the most successful innovators of our time, such as Thomas Edison – imagine what would have happened if he had let his fear of failure prevent him from progressing.

How to Get Things Done

If you find yourself procrastinating, assess whether you truly want to complete the tasks.
Determine the task's true “value” – how committed are you? Is it truly worthwhile? What will you get if you finish it?
Make certain that the task is yours and no one else's! If you're doing it for someone else, you should reconsider whether it's worthwhile.
Concentrate on the outcome rather than the task itself. If you are truly committed to completing the task, the end result should inspire and motivate you to press on and complete it.
Get over your fear of failing. Change your mindset and accept that failure is a necessary step toward success.
