1. Welcome the Dawn

Even if you're not a morning person, set aside some time to watch the sun rise. Prepare for this moment by choosing a vantage point and determining when the weather in your area will be clear enough to usher in a lovely day. Make some strong coffee and bring a friend. Remind yourself of all the possibilities that a new day holds as the sun rises.

2. Go in a Different Direction

Allow yourself enough time to take the scenic route to work. Instead of using the freeway, try using side streets. Make a concerted effort to vary your routine travels from time to time and discover new places and people.

3. Arrange a Mini-Roadtrip

Discover new vistas just around the corner. Look up nearby points of interest on the internet, or scour the countryside for vegetable stands and garage sales. To make the most of your miles, you don't have to travel far or spend a lot of time (or money).

4. Shift to a Different Drummer's Beat

Tired of hearing the same old song? Spotify, for example, allows users to listen to entire albums and preview different artists for free. Spotify can also recommend other music based on the genres you prefer. Who knows, your quest for variety may lead to the discovery of a completely new musical interest!

5. Turn off the television

At best, watching television is a passive activity. Why not turn it off for a day and look for news and entertainment elsewhere? Read a newspaper, attend a community theater performance, or simply enjoy some rare silence.

6. Construct Something Interesting

Make an attempt at crafting. Make simple recyclable crafts for kids or try reconnecting with an existing skill. Pinterest is an excellent resource for finding quick and easy projects.

7. Locate a Poem

Bring out your inner Shakespeare by writing a sonnet using words from newspapers, owner's manuals, magazines, or even this blog post. For example, select every third word from your collected material and enter it into a word bank. Next, select words from your bank that are appropriate for a Haiku format (5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the next, and 5 for the last).

8. Take a trip down memory lane

Remember all of the photos you took at your last family reunion or vacation? What about the old diary stashed in the shoebox? Look for those memories and spend time with them. Consider what piqued your interest back then as you travel down memory lane. Rekindling dormant embers can be the first step in igniting a new interest.

9. Children's Visit

Children aren't afraid to color outside the lines or to color the sky orange instead of blue. Spending time with them will expose you to the wild musings of your inner child. The young people in your life will enjoy the attention, and as the old adage goes, kids say the darndest things!

10. Make Your Own Value Meal

What would you make if you only had $2.00 to make a meal? Scrounge through your pantry first, then supplement your culinary discoveries with a $2.00 (or less) purchase at your local grocery store or farmer's market.

11. Act as an anthropologist

Take a small notebook and a pen and sit in a park, a cafe, or a shopping mall. Make notes of your observations of the people you see, as well as the snippets of conversation you can't help but overhear. This exercise gets you out of your head and into the world around you.

12. Engage in Random Acts of Kindness

Make your day more interesting by boosting your positive outlook and brightening someone else's mood. According to positive psychology research, doing something unexpected and kind benefits both you and others. Try holding a door open for someone, sending a thank you e-mail, or writing a “love letter” to a stranger.

13. Experiment with Food

Give your taste buds a new experience. Perhaps you've seen a new restaurant or heard about an ethnic cuisine you've never tried. Go ahead and give it a shot, even if it's just for an appetizer at first. Find a recipe for your favorite cuisine and make it at home for maximum impact.

14. Set up a simple scavenger hunt

Have you ever noticed how focusing on one thing makes it nearly impossible to see other things? Go on a quick scavenger hunt in your home or office to test your awareness patterns. Choose a simple trait to search for, such as words containing the letter “Q” or anything containing the color green. Attempt to amass a collection of ten items that meet your specified criteria. In the process, you might even come across those long-lost keys.

15. Toss a coin

You can't decide between two menu items or what to do on a random Sunday afternoon? Call one of them heads and the other tails, and leave the outcome to the whims of chance. You might be pleasantly surprised by the results.

16. Find Treasure in the Library

Visit your local library and browse the shelves. Scan the titles for something that catches your eye, then check out the books on the shelves above and below. Because of the way libraries are organized, there's a good chance you'll find something related but slightly different from what piqued your interest in the first place.

17. Help others by volunteering

What better way to spice up your day than to be the change you want to see in the world? Consider the local organizations that do good in your community. Make contact with them and offer your time and talent. If you're not sure where to begin, an online resource like VolunteerMatch.org can help connect you to causes that are important to you.

18. Spend Time With Your Pets

Animals can be a never-ending source of fascination and entertainment for those who come into contact with them. Give your dog or cat a new toy and spend some time with them to make sure they enjoy it. You don't have a pet? Consider adopting from a shelter or pet-sitting for a friend.

19. Go Back to Your Childhood Dreams

What do you want to be when you're older? Try to remember how you responded to that question as a child. Did you aspire to be a nurse, an artist, or a used car salesman? If you aren't already living your five-year-dream, old's spend some time reading about the profession you would have chosen for yourself.

20. Take a moment to smell the roses

When was the last time you spent time admiring a rose bush, a bed of hydrangeas, or a lovely bouquet at the grocery store? Flowers have evolved over 100 million years to provide you with their enchanting appearances and inviting fragrances.

21. Don't Surf — Stumble

StumbleUpon is a free web-based tool for discovering new websites, photos, and blogs. Simply choose what interests you, and StumbleUpon will recommend related websites at random.

22. Recycle Something

Make your day more interesting, save money, and help the environment all at the same time. Find an everyday object and think of another way to use it. Consider reusing common waste items such as paper plates, coffee cups, and plastic bags. What new and useful creations can you come up with?

Learn how to say hello in a foreign language. It is quick and simple to learn a few simple phrases in another language, such as “How are you?” and “Thank you.” Find someone to practice your pleasantries with once you've mastered them. You might meet a new friend in a strange land!

24. Change Hands

For writing and other manual tasks, most people prefer one hand over the other. Try writing a short note or doodling a simple picture with your other hand if it's safe and practical. Try to master simple tasks with your non-dominant hand.

25. Recognize That Today Is Actually Interesting

Maybe it's “National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day” or “Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day” today. Discover what makes today unique or learn about what happened today in history.

You don't have to do anything extravagant to add some variety to your life. Let go of the reins and see where the journey takes you. Meeting new people, discovering a poem, or resurrecting a dormant talent all have benefits that go far beyond breaking free from the mundane.
