Now, let's go over the seven different approaches you can take when making life-altering decisions.
1. Recognize Your Decision-Making Power
Before you can make a decision, you must first understand what a decision is.
Any decision you make sets in motion a series of events. When you decide to smoke a cigarette, you may decide to smoke another one later to get the same high feeling. You may have gone through a pack without realizing it after a day. However, if you decide not to smoke the first cigarette and make a decision every five minutes to focus your attention somewhere else when you get that craving, your cravings will eventually subside and you will become smoke-free after a week.
But it all comes down to that first decision of whether or not to pick up that cigarette.
2. Follow Your Instincts
We frequently take too long to make a decision because we are afraid of what will happen. As a result, before making a decision, we go through processes such as careful planning, in-depth analysis, and weighing the pros and cons. This is a time-consuming procedure.
Instead, learn to rely on your instincts. For the most part, your first instinct is usually correct or the one you truly wanted to follow.
Even if you make a mistake, following your instincts makes you a more confident decision maker than someone who takes all day to decide.
3. Put Your Decision Into Action
When you make a decision, follow through on it. Make a firm commitment to making a decision.
What exactly is a real decision? It is when you make a decision and then put that decision into action. It's pointless to make a decision, play it out in your head, and then do nothing about it. That is equivalent to not making a decision at all.
If you want to make lasting changes in your life, you must make it a habit to follow through on your decisions until they are completed. You will feel more confident in making the next decision after going through this process several times.
4. Inform Others of Your Decisions
Something about telling others what we're going to do motivates us to follow through.
For example, I've been attempting to become an early riser for quite some time. Trying to wake up early without falling back asleep felt impossible whenever I tried to use my own willpower. So I went to a forum and decided to tell everyone that I would wake up at 6 a.m. and stay up all night. I was able to complete this task in two days because I felt a moral obligation to follow through on my words, even though I failed the first time.
Did anyone give a damn? Probably not, but just knowing that someone else is looking to see if you're telling the truth will be enough motivation to follow through on your decision.
5. Apply What You've Learned From Previous Decisions
I didn't give up even after I failed to follow through on my decision the first time I told people I was going to wake up early and stay up late. I essentially asked myself, “What can I do now to make it work tomorrow?”
- The truth is that you will make mistakes when making decisions at times. Instead of beating yourself up about it, use it to your advantage.
- Consider what was good about the decision you made. What was the flaw? What can I take away from it to help me make a better decision the next time?
- Remember to place less emphasis on short-term effects and more emphasis on long-term effects.
6. Maintain a Versatile Approach
I know it may seem counter-intuitive, but just because you've made a decision doesn't mean you can't consider other options.
Assume you made the decision to lose ten pounds through cardio by next month. You don't have to just do cardio if something comes up. You can be open to losing weight through various dieting methods as long as it helps you reach your ultimate goal.
Don't be too stubborn to look for only one way to make a decision. Accept any new information that brings you closer to completing your initial decision.
7. Have a Good Time Making Decisions
Finally, have fun with the process. I understand that making decisions isn't the most enjoyable thing in the world, but when you do it frequently, it becomes a game of chance.
You'll learn a lot about yourself along the way, you'll feel and become a lot more confident around yourself and others, and making decisions will just become a lot easier after you've done it so many times that you won't even think about it.
Anything you decide to do from this point forward has the potential to have a significant impact later on. Opportunities are always available to you. Examine the decisions you've made so far in the day.
