How to Maximize Your Time (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

Have you ever had one of those days where you get up from your desk, answer phone calls from family members, and browse the internet only to realize it's noon and you haven't accomplished anything? Every one of us has been there. However, when this becomes a daily occurrence, it is time to act. Use the following suggestions to increase productivity at work, school, or at home.

1. Make a list of “Time-Wasters

Begin your day by making a list of the things you know you waste time on. Keep the list close at hand. When you notice yourself wasting time, add it to the list. This will serve as a reminder of things you should not allow yourself to do, such as watching cat videos instead of sending emails.

2. Hide Or Remove Social Media Apps

According to Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange research, the average person spends 3.6 hours per day socializing online among those who use social media. That's roughly one-quarter of the time you're awake! Consider what you could accomplish with those extra hours.

Remove social networking apps from your mobile device's home screen and the toolbar on your computer's browser to avoid wasting this time. While the sites will not be completely blocked, this practice will keep you from checking updates on the spur of the moment (when, let's face it, there's nothing new there anyway).

3. Establish Daily Goals with Reminders

Every day brings new tasks to complete. Take life one day at a time to make it easier for yourself to complete each task. Do you have a large report due the following month? Instead of waiting until the last minute, think about what you'll do each day to finish it. To stay on top of your daily goals, use apps like Google Calendar. You can use reminders to stay organized and avoid forgetting anything.

4. Finish the Most Important Tasks First

It's all too easy to begin your day with the simplest of tasks. Even when you're avoiding your big project, it makes you feel like you're accomplishing something. However, by the time you finish your less important tasks, you are exhausted and even more hesitant to begin your priority work.

Change things up by completing the most important tasks first. When you're finished, you'll feel relieved, and the rest of your day will go more smoothly.

5. Quit multitasking

The concept of multitasking is a myth! According to NPR, humans are unable to physically multitask. Instead, our brains juggle attention from one task to the next so quickly that we fool ourselves into thinking we're multitasking.

But we're not very good at it. If you try to do too many things at once, you will most likely fail to complete those tasks to a high standard. Furthermore, it may take you longer than if you simply focused on one task at a time, implying that multitasking only serves to reduce your productivity.

6. Make the Most of Downtime

What do you do when you're waiting in the doctor's office or riding the train home? You're wasting time if you're staring out the window. Instead, you could be sending emails, brainstorming, and taking notes on your next work or school project. As long as you're doing something productive, you could even use this downtime to work on your daily stress-relieving breathing exercises.

7. Read Time Management Books (And Follow Their Suggestions!)

Consider reading time-management books to get the best advice on how to manage your time. They will most likely be more useful to you because they are more detailed. There are often exercises to help you apply the concepts as well.

“Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity,” “The Skinny on Time Management: How to Maximize Your 24-Hour Gift,” and “Eat That Frog! : 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time” are all good places to start.
