I never wanted to say no to anyone when I was a kid. I was so eager to please that I agreed to do things I didn't want to do with people I didn't want to be around. I realized I needed to take a stand and live my own life by the time I graduated from high school.
I began by slacking off on things, but quickly realized that this is a terrible way to be. Instead, I shifted my perspective and took the necessary steps to learn to say no. Here are ten things you can do to stop being a pushover and start saying no.

1. Make a list of your top priorities in life
You must immediately sort out your priorities. What is most important to you? Make a list of the ten long-term goals you want to achieve in your life. This makes decision-making easier because you're basing them on your priorities. When you're focused on your priorities, you won't have time to turn down offers.
2. Visualize a path
The main problem for protagonist Richard Hendricks in HBO's new show Silicon Valley is that he lacks a vision for his company. This lack of vision serves as the impetus for the first season's plotlines, as investors are intrigued by his technology but all want to know his vision for the future before they can trust him. Mike Judge, the show's creator, made an important point. You must have a vision of your future in order to achieve it.
3. Be succinct
When it comes to telling someone no, simply saying no is sufficient. You don't need to go into more detail about why. Simply inform them that you are not interested. High-pressure salespeople will prod you for more information in order to keep you talking so they can persuade you, but there's no point in wasting time when you're going to turn them down anyway. Instead of arming your opponent with information, simply say no.
4. Recite a mantra
When you have advance notice that you will be presented with an unfavorable proposition, you have time to prepare. Repeat to yourself over and over that you are not going to . Even if you don't have advance notice, it's a good idea to remind yourself of the things you don't want to do on a regular basis just in case you do. Never lose sight of yourself.
5. Make a strong statement about yourself
When telling someone no, be firm. If they press you, state your case. You have the right to choose as a human being. Rather than handing over control to someone else, assert your right to choose your own adventure. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to live with the consequences of your choices, so do what's best for you.
6. Concentrate on the positive
You don't have to be rude or cruel just because you're rejecting someone. It's unnecessary to tell someone you're not interested because it's a bad idea. Tell them it sounds great, but you're pressed for time. Focusing on the positive aspects allows you to maintain the appearance of friendliness while still pursuing your own agenda.
7. Do not be concerned about the outcome
If you say no to someone, the world will not end. They may or may not be upset with you, but that is not your concern. Has anyone ever said no to you? Did they hold your hand the entire time? If it isn't happening to you, there's no reason to do it for someone else. We're all adults who can deal with rejection. Don't be afraid to reject anyone; instead, concentrate on yourself.
8. Try not to be defensive
When rejecting someone, it's easy to become defensive. You may feel compelled to defend your position, but you do not. When you say no, it's the end of the transaction. Don't try to justify your choices to anyone. You owe no explanation to anyone.
9. Stand firm in your convictions
Once you've said no, don't change your mind. Allow yourself to be persuaded. You don't want people to think you're a softie; it's seen as a sign of weakness, and some unscrupulous person will take advantage. Choose a lane and stay in it. In the long run, you'll be happier.
Saying no, like everything else in life, takes practice. Begin with small steps, such as the times you've already said no. When you place an order at a restaurant, for example, they will ask if there is anything else you require. While you're eating, your server will come by the table a few times to see if you need anything. Without even realizing it, you're probably saying no to these people. Make use of that momentum by saying no to others.
Put My Phone Down: When you are out with friends or at a business meeting, don't check your phone. It's rude to check your phone when you are talking to someone. Your phone is not more important than the person you are with. If a call or a text message comes in, send a reply later. If you are writing a text, don't write it until after the conversation is over. Resist the urge to check your phone for texts or calls, and focus on the person you are with. Read more.
It's Ok to Fail: You can't get anywhere in life without failing at some point. It's the only way we learn and grow. If you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough and if you're not trying hard enough, you're not living the life you want to live.
