We can push people away without even realizing it. Sometimes we do it consciously, but later regret it. While the ways in which you push people away may vary from person to person, there are some less-than-ideal behaviors that will undoubtedly result in some distances. 2. Avoiding conversation

If you're with a group of friends and you're sitting in a corner not speaking to anyone, you send the message that you should be left alone. While it may be difficult to recognize, this definitely repels people. Don't put your faith in the pity or charity of others. Get up and start talking to people! It's far more rewarding and will almost certainly have the opposite effect of driving people away. It will, if anything, bring you closer to your friends!

If a friend approaches you with a problem, try to listen and assist him or her. People are turned off when they believe they can't come to you for advice or support, so try to listen and engage when speaking with others. This is an easy fix that will make your relationships much stronger and more rewarding for everyone involved. After all, if you listen, others will follow suit. You're being a good friend, and when you need advice in the future, your friends will be there to help you.

4. Making it all about you

Life isn't always fair, and things don't always go as planned. However, when you act as if everything revolves around you, it makes people want to spend less time with you. Try to see things from other people's points of view and to step back from the situation. People aren't likely to be speaking negatively about you as much as you believe.

5. Excessive whining

A good venting session every now and then can be beneficial. However, if you are constantly complaining about something, it can drive people away. They, after all, have their own issues to deal with. If you really need someone to be there for you, consider consulting a professional to get the assistance you require. Otherwise, don't overburden your friends with your problems. It's tempting to complain, and it can feel good to do so, but it will only make you and your friends unhappy in the long run. The only thing worse than having things to complain about is having to listen to these constant complaints.

6. Taking an accusatory tone

If you accuse someone of something and do so frequently, you will alienate that person. No one wants to feel as if they are being accused of anything, so avoid doing so. Try rephrasing your words if you feel the need to confront someone about something. Instead of saying, “You never clean the kitchen,” say, “I feel like I'm usually the one who cleans the kitchen.” Could you assist me the next time?” The second version says the same thing, but in a much more conciliatory tone.
