How to Unplug (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

In a world driven by constant technological innovation and our innate desire for more and more in life, when does society plateau or become content with what is? Almost certainly NEVER! Remember playing outside until the sun went down, going to the library to get books for the week, and having to look things up in the encyclopedia? Nowadays, it appears that the world is literally at our fingertips, making life so much easier. Is that correct?

Going through life at a breakneck pace

When does it get to be too much? We no longer exclaim when a toddler who can't even talk can navigate an iPad or a cell phone better than some adults. We no longer question whether it is acceptable to take leave from work by sending a quick text to your boss. Our social etiquette is gradually changing, but at what cost?

The overload of stimulation causes a great deal of stress. The amount of information being thrown at people is frightening. Because our bodies have not yet evolved to be able to handle it, we must be mindful of how much is too much. Simplifying, minimizing, and slowing down are all ways to bring more peace into our daily lives and relieve the pressure we put on ourselves to keep up.

Cell phones have evolved into a form of self-expression

Instead of the glow of lighters, a cast of white light recording to capture the moment illuminates the crowd at concerts. With the constant need to post, check-in, and hashtag our experiences, our ability to engage and connect with people and moments in life suffers.

New generations are losing their peripheral vision, people are injuring themselves while walking and texting, and our youth's social skills are not developing appropriately for their age. Instead of storing memories in our minds, we rely on hard drives to do so. The art of writing a handwritten letter or card, or even learning how to write a script, is becoming obsolete. While social media, technology, and innovation have aided our daily lives, being aware of the impact they have on our relationships, quality of life, and stress levels can encourage all of us to unplug and recharge ourselves on a regular basis.

We are all at the mercy of technology in so many ways. It is necessary to develop healthy habits in order to achieve balance and a lifestyle that allows you to be present in your life.

5 easy ways to become more present in your life

Here are some pointers to help you do just that:

Make time in your day to be cell-free – Having your phone with you at all times can create a need to check in too frequently. It's so difficult to avoid that blinking green or blue notification light! Dedicate time during the day where your cell phone is out of sight so you can focus and truly be with people. Make a list of personal rules, such as no phone calls at the dinner table, when you have guests over, or when you are in public.
Notifications of silence – When you are not required to respond to a text, call, or email, put your phone on silent to avoid constant distraction and to avoid being tempted to respond immediately. Stress can be caused by the pressure of having to respond quickly or multitask. We are more efficient when we focus on one task at a time!
Pay attention to nature – Being outside in nature is one of the best ways to stay centered and engaged in the present moment. Soaking in the sounds, getting some fresh air, and getting some sun exposure are all beneficial to the mind, body, and spirit.

Read a book – Too much screen time harms our eyes, posture, and brains. Taking breaks from the screen to read a book is a good way to get information and entertainment while avoiding the physical strain caused by an electronic device. If you like to read in bed, place a pillow behind your head so you don't have to look down at the book; this keeps your neck in a neutral position.
Play music – Instead of watching television all day on weekends, listen to music instead. Music can help you focus, be more creative, and relax your mind.

5 Advantages of Unplugging

This will immediately allow you to become more present in your life, which will have the following effects:

  • Improve your interpersonal communication and relationships
  • Increase your creativity and focus
  • De-stress and alleviate anxiety or fear
  • Increase your gratitude
  • Bring about inner peace and joy

Try incorporating these tips into your daily routine, and your life will become much more interesting and less stressful!
