I Care Too Much About What Others Think (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

We all care, in some way, about what others think of us and our life choices. The irony is that it is usually a family member or a close friend who offers their opinion, rather than a stranger on the street. If you allow it, someone else's opinion of you can have a significant impact on your life. However, there is a significant difference between caring and being concerned about what other people think of you.

If you care, it is more likely that you respect their opinion and point of view, and that you will consider and review it before going your own way. However, if you worry all the time, it can quickly escalate and affect your decision-making. You may become a people-pleaser who listens to every opinion except your own, which can erode your self-esteem in the long run.

It's natural to want to be liked and respected, but how much you care about what other people think is entirely up to you. With that in mind, I'd like to share some reminders about what to remember when you're overly concerned with what others think of you.

People do not think about you as much as you believe.

Most people around you are preoccupied with themselves and what affects them and their lives. You and your choices are rarely on their radar, and even when they are, it is not as frequently as you might think. Consider this for a moment: how often do you consider a decision made by a friend? Okay, maybe for the first few minutes, but I doubt you'll be thinking about it and worrying about it for days on end.

1. It's none of your concern

What other people think of you is their concern, not yours. Even if you learn what they think of you, it will not change who you are or how you live your life. The only way it can change your life is if you let it control you and prioritize other people's thoughts. You can't control what other people think about you, so give up now and focus solely on what you think about yourself.

2. You are the one and only one of a kind

This is a great one to keep in mind. When you are concerned about what other people think of you, you begin to lose your individuality and believe that you must conform in some way. Instead, take a different perspective and remember that you are the only version of yourself: you are unique, special, and perfect in your own right. Treasure your individuality; get all of your hair cut off if you want, dress outrageously, and get that piercing you've always wanted. Be true to yourself. You will be much happier if you respect that.

3. Why does it matter to you in the first place?

What impact does someone's disapproval of something you've done or said have on you and your life? Are you going to change every time someone expresses dissatisfaction with something? I don't think so. Consider whether a comment about your appearance or what you say will be important to you in a week or so. If you try to look at things this way, you will save a lot of time and energy worrying for nothing.

4. Are you clairvoyant?

You'll know what people are thinking if you have'special powers' and are skilled at using a crystal ball. But, since the vast majority of you reading this aren't psychic, my question is: how do you know what others are thinking? The issue here is your thinking and what you believe they are thinking. Don't you think it's crazy? So, unless you have the ability to read minds, stop caring what others think of you.

5. Accept that how others perceive you is their problem, not yours

How many times have you looked at someone from a distance, judged them based on their appearance, and then met them and changed your mind? I'm sure it's happened many times. You see, you never really get the whole picture about someone. So, if someone forms an opinion about you without all the facts and on the surface, that is their problem, not yours. Let them worry about it while you go about your business knowing the whole truth.

6. Choose to be self-aware and present at all times

This is about determining how you want to feel on a daily basis. Do you want to be consumed by thoughts about other people and what they think of you all the time? Stop worrying about a past comment or what someone “might” do or say in the future. Stay in the present moment and remember that you are solely responsible for your own thoughts. Everything comes down to how you want to live your life. Do you want to be unhappy and a people-pleaser, or a happy, good person who understands that everyone has an opinion, but it is up to you whether you let it affect you or not? That is the way of life!

7. Surround yourself with people who accept you for who you are

Being able to rely on good friends is important for your health and mind, so perhaps it's time to avoid spending time with people or family members who don't accept your way of life or the decisions you make. There will always be people who disagree with you, so you can either ignore them or move on without them. Remember to surround yourself with people who are positive, uplifting, and inspiring, and who accept you for who you are, warts and all.

8. Everyone is concerned about what others think of them

You are not alone in your thoughts. Everyone else has the same concerns, worries, and thoughts as you do. It's in our nature to do so. So, the next time someone criticizes you, try to put yourself in their shoes. Maybe you're bringing out something in them that they wish they could do, so their first reaction is to dismiss you. Keep this in mind, and you'll have a much easier time sleeping at night.

9. Stay true to yourself

Being true to yourself entails being honest and speaking up, even if it scares you to death. Today, almost everyone uses social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Posting our status updates, pictures, and sharing our most intimate stories appears to be the norm, so if you're going to do it, do it honestly and with integrity. Speak your mind without regard for what others may think. Do it with pride as long as you are not intending to intentionally harm anyone. Above all, don't try to pass it off as genuine. Be yourself, and those who care about you will accept you; those who don't won't. So, instead of apologizing, stop existing and start living!
