Why are we so easily discouraged?

It's normal for our brains to be wired to give up easily. Humans are thought to act on the “Pleasure Principle,” or the desire for instant gratification:

The desire to experience pleasure or fulfillment without delay or deferment is referred to as instant gratification. Simply put, it is when you want it, and you want it now.

Our brains are hardwired for immediate gratification. We are wired to seek immediate gratification because in ancient times, getting immediate benefits was critical for survival. We are very present-oriented, so when we don't get what we want right away, we become anxious and want to give up.

Yes, wanting to give up every now and then is normal. But giving up is not an option.

But don't give up just yet, because nothing worthwhile comes easily.

The consequences of quitting too soon

Instant success is always a myth. Many successful people failed hundreds of times before succeeding; if they chose to give up instead of working harder to achieve their goals, they would never succeed.

Walt Disney, for example, had previously been fired by a newspaper editor because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” He would not have discovered the successful Disney business if he had stopped imagining and dreaming about big ideas.

Take, for example, the well-known soccer player David Beckham. He went through a rough patch after receiving a red card in a World Cup match against Argentina in 1998. Everyone despised and blamed him for the England team's failure to advance to the next round. If Beckham had retired from soccer, we would not have seen the successful player lead various teams and become one of the most legendary players in history.

If you give up now, you will miss out on a very bright future and excellent results.

Learn why giving up is not an option

Do what your future self will thank you for, not what you will be sorry for. Here are eight things to do when you want to give up.

1. Remember why you started and how badly you wanted it

Consider the moment this project, goal, or concept was conceived. Remember the excitement and thrill of the upcoming adventure? You started with a goal in mind, a beautiful image of the completed task in your mind. The beginning was simple; the continuation has become difficult.

Returning to the beginning clarifies the goal of your endeavor. When you begin to consider why you started in the first place, the memory of anticipation of the job completed is rekindled. Take a deep breath in and recall your purpose.

2. Investigate the Reason for Your Desire to Quit

The desire to give up can be overwhelming. Look at the reasons why you want to quit rather than the generalized feeling. Are you physically exhausted? Have you been so preoccupied with things that you have neglected to take care of yourself? Do you have a lack of support? Are you incompetent? Have you encountered any difficulties for which you were unprepared? Do you need to take a step back before proceeding?

There are numerous reasons why you might want to quit. Be diligent in determining the true issues and addressing them specifically. You can address the feeling once you determine what is causing it.

3. Visualize the End Result in Your Mind

Keep an image of the end result in mind. A mental picture of what you want to achieve will keep you motivated. Seriously, you don't want to stop halfway through. The sensation of being a quitter is unpleasant. You've been declared the winner! Remember the slogan: victory's rush or defeat's agony!

Whenever you want to give up, ask yourself if you want the rush of victory. Would you rather suffer the agony of defeat? Keep going; you can do it. This is how you can stay motivated and persevere even in the face of adversity.

4. Create a plan and a backup

Always have a plan of action in place before embarking on any endeavor.

This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. For tasks completed along the way, you can make a list, a breakout chart, or a checklist. When you have a plan in place, you can refer to it and refocus on the steps necessary to achieve your goal.

Also, have a backup plan in mind before you begin; this way, if you become frustrated and want to give up, you will have a plan B to fall back on.

Life will knock you down, but don't give up!

5. Seek Help from Others

Don't isolate yourself or try to hide your frustrations, and don't be afraid to seek help from others. Reach out to family, friends, coworkers, or even online forums to find someone to talk to about what is weighing you down and making you want to quit.

I promise you that there are a lot of other people out there who are dealing with the same feelings of doubt, fear, and frustration that you are. Finding another person who has been through a similar crisis will help you strengthen your resolve and get back on track.

6. Be Thankful for the Good Things Even When You Are Struggling

Yes, you may want to give up. You are, indeed, struggling. Yes, you are currently overwhelmed. I know it may seem strange to say, but remember to be grateful. This is critical in developing a resilient mindset.

Whenever you feel like giving up, take a moment to make a list of all the things you are thankful for in your life. You have so much to be thankful for in your life. When you shift your focus to being grateful for everything, even the most difficult tasks take on new meaning.

The attitude with which you view the situations around you determines how you perceive them. Take on a grateful attitude and you'll be amazed at how much of a difference it makes.

7. Rejoice in your victories, no matter how minor they appear to be

You deserve to be recognized for all of your accomplishments along the way. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by all that remains to be done, make a list of accomplishments you have already completed, no matter how minor they may appear.

You will gain energy to finish what you are doing if you celebrate your progress. When you see everything you've accomplished, it will motivate you to keep going until you reach the finish line.

Never give up!
