Mistakes. We've all made mistakes in our lives, and the prospect of repeating them is never appealing. The point is that we make mistakes all the time, sometimes badly. Perhaps you said the wrong thing in the heat of the moment, or did something you would never have done if it hadn't been for your emotional state. We've all been there, and it's excruciating. The key is determining what to do after the deed.

1. Express your regrets as soon as possible

When it comes to making a mistake of any size, saying “sorry” is the best policy. Staying indifferent is insulting because it implies that you don't care, which is extremely rude. As a result, you should immediately apologize to the parties involved.

You may have to eat a piece of humble pie at some point, but that is the price of being less than perfect. Choosing the more honorable path and apologizing for your errors may be more awkward than burying your head in the sand and walking away, but it will earn you respect, friends, forgiveness, and self-esteem. So, if you make a mistake, apologize profusely and get back to work.

2. Gain some perspective and a dose of reality

When you've messed up, one of the most important things you can do is take a step back and gain some perspective and/or a reality check on the situation. Hopefully, the situation you've just instigated isn't too serious (i.e. something that will result in a stint in criminal court or your family never speaking to you again), and if it is, it can help to try to evaluate what you've done logically and objectively.

If your blunder is repairable, you should be thankful. And, while it may have an impact on the people you care about, work with, or spend time with, you can most likely resolve this issue. You probably haven't killed anyone, ruined anyone's life, or caused major distress to anyone. “Dum spiro spero,” as the great philosopher Cicero put it, “while I breathe, I hope.”

3. Create a plan to prevent it from happening again

It is acceptable to make mistakes; everyone makes mistakes from time to time (yes, even that picture-perfect, sweet-as-pie girl in the office or that immaculately put-together guy down the street). The point is that mistakes are unavoidable, but what we do to prevent them from happening again is what matters in the long run. Basically? Make a strategy.

Determine exactly what went wrong and seriously consider what you can do in the future to help prevent it from happening again. Make a concerted effort to learn something, remember something, and put something in place. After you've worked out your plan, go to the person you offended or affected by your blunder, tell them what you're going to do to prevent it from happening again, and then let the chips fall where they may. Making mistakes is natural, but what distinguishes you as a great person is how you recover from them and ensure that you never hurt the same person in the same way again.

4. Take a breather

One of the best things you can do is get out of the environment where the mistake occurred to prevent your mind from dwelling on the situation. Staying in that immediate environment and ruminating on your mistake will only cause you to lose focus, lose your ability to work and live in that situation, and end up in a shame spiral.

Take a break; get out of that office, home, or wherever you are and go for a walk somewhere. Get yourself out of that negative mindset that will continue to haunt you and impair your ability to function as a normal, functioning human being. Spend a solid 15 minutes gathering your energy and strengths before making your plan.

5. Be gentle with yourself

Finally, after experiencing guilt and sadness as a result of a mistake, practice some self-compassion. In a world where we are expected to be flawless human beings with physical perfection and ideal lives, the thought of messing up appears almost terrifying. That is not the case. You are a human being. It is acceptable to make mistakes.

Don't berate yourself, and don't dwell on your mistake to the point where it affects your mental health or your ability to be yourself around friends, coworkers, and loved ones. They, too, are human, and the vast majority of people will gladly assist you in recovering and sincerely apologizing. Take a deep breath, try to relax, and remember that this is not the end of the world. You can always start over, and when your head hits the pillow, remember Scarlett O'Hara's timeless adage, “After all… tomorrow's another day!”
