Is Escapism Bad (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

If you have a habit of escaping reality by fantasizing about your ideal scenario, you are probably an escapist. But being an escapist isn't all bad; like everything else in life, it has its advantages and disadvantages.

But, believe it or not, we all have an escapist in us. However, some of us have a tendency to take escapism to an unhealthy level. In this article, I will identify five positive and five negative signs of being an escapist. So, if you want to know if you are an escapist, look at the 10 signs listed below.

The Positive Signs

1. You fantasize (a lot)

You could be an escapist if you have a habit of daydreaming (a lot). Escapists are people who want to make their own reality while going about their daily activities. And these day dreams don't happen on purpose; they happen quite naturally when you least expect it. And when they do happen, you embrace them. Many of these fantasies revolve around your deepest desires, such as becoming a rock star or celebrity, or being able to stand up for yourself.

2. You have a lot of imagination

If you can create your own alternate reality in your mind, you must be a very imaginative and creative person. And, as a result of developing this habit of imagining, you regularly exercise your creative muscles, allowing you to come up with new ideas on a regular basis. When you think about it, some of the most imaginative works of literature or art (such as Star Wars, Batman, and so on) are all set in a dystopian universe.

3. You want to live your life on your terms

If you are an escapist, chances are you work in a job that you dislike. And you most likely have a strong desire to leave your job. However, being an escapist is more than just wishing you could quit your job; there may be many things in your life that you wish weren't there. They could be financial or family-related issues over which you have no control. Escapists like you yearn to be free of your shackles and live life on your own terms.

4. You enjoy traveling around the world

You're easily bitten by the travel bug. And by traveling, I don't mean going to the beach and partying (though you won't mind doing that now and then). Your idea of traveling is to discover and embrace the diverse cultures that the world has to offer. And, because you're an escapist, you'll be drawn to pictures on Facebook of your friends showing off their latest travel adventures, and you can't help but feel slightly envious.

5. You enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction

As mentioned in one of the previous signs, escapists are extremely creative and are responsible for some of the greatest works of fiction, particularly in the fantasy and sci-fi genres. And, as a fellow escapist, you admire their work because it allows you to be a part of their fictitious universe. It provides you with an opportunity to flee.

The Warning Signs

6. Your desire to quit your job may cause you to perform poorly at work

This is a classic sign for anyone who enjoys escaping reality. If you are an escapist, you probably despise your job. There is a part of you that aspires to greater things, such as a better career or the opportunity to do something you enjoy. So you keep daydreaming and lose sight of what you should be doing. As a result, you run the risk of underperforming at work.

7. You might be a video game addict

Video games have recently evolved to the point where you feel as if you are a part of their pixelated world. You, like many escapists, are probably addicted to video games because they allow you to escape into an imaginary reality. Games like the SIMs are becoming increasingly popular because they allow you to create your own alternate version of yourself in which you live your dream life. And you don't want to let go of your universe because you are so engrossed in it.

8. You recognize that the world is a harsh place

This is a common trait shared by all escapists and should be interpreted as a warning sign. As an escapist, you've probably imagined this fantastic future in which you'll be living the life of your dreams. But when you go out and pursue your dream, the reality of the world disappoints you. You will quickly realize this, so return to simply imagining your ideal world, where you are happy.

9. You are prone to procrastination

Although you may have all of these dreams of living your ideal life, the truth is that something is holding you back and preventing you from pursuing your passion. Your fear of failure is the only thing holding you back. Actually, you're terrified of failing. You keep asking yourself “what ifs,” all of which revolve around failure (e.g., “what if everyone mocks me because I want to be a writer?!”). As a result, you end up staying where you are and begin procrastinating.

10. You are incapable of dealing with uncertainty

Similar to the previous point, your inability to deal with uncertainty is a sign of procrastination. You go to your alternate dream world to escape the actual reality that you find difficult to accept. When faced with an uncertain situation, you tend to procrastinate and fantasize. That is because your dream provides you with certainty and security.

Conclusion

When it comes to being an escapist, there are both positive and negative indicators. The positive signs tend to lead to creativity and exploration, while the negative signs tend to lead to procrastination and an inability to accept reality. If you are having trouble accepting reality and pursuing your passion, you may benefit from seeking professional assistance. But, hopefully, this article has familiarized you with the signs that are commonly associated with being an escapist.
