Your partner gets up and gets off the couch, saying, “I'm going to take a shower.” I'll be there in a minute.”
“All right,” you say.

Then you hear the bathroom door lock, the shower turn on, and finally the soothing sound of water crashing on the tub. Then it hits you like a ton of bricks! Your partner left their phone right next to you, and you have an overwhelming desire to look through it!
You know the password and are confident that you can easily search through it while they are in the shower. You know you have at least 10 minutes, if not 15 minutes, to go to town on their text messages and even email, and you are desperate to do so! You rationalize your actions in your head and prepare to sift through it.
But here are four reasons why that is a bad idea!
1. You are betraying their faith in you
By leaving their phone out in the open, your partner has demonstrated their trust in you. They have shown respect and faith in you, so at the very least, you should reciprocate. You violate their trust and respect by secretly searching through their phone.
2. You're Ruining Your Relationship
By betraying the apparent trust you had with your partner, you jeopardized your relationship. It doesn't matter if you find anything suspicious. The fact that you don't trust your companion indicates that you're not on the right track with them. The insecurity of believing they aren't committed to you reveals a lot about where you really stand with them. By concealing something, you only advance in the wrong direction!
3. A variety of negative scenarios are possible
If you do decide to look through their phone, you may encounter a number of unintended consequences. For one thing, your partner could catch you—which would not only be extremely awkward, but could also lead to the end of your relationship! Nobody wants someone who secretly and deviously goes through their belongings when they are not present. If your partner catches you doing this, there's a good chance they'll break up with you.
You might also see something you weren't supposed to see. There are some personal details that your partner should not be discussing, and you may happen to come across one of them. From awkward pictures of themselves that were meant only for them to see, to extremely personal messages between them and their family or friends, to strange Google searches. “Some stones are better left unturned,” as the saying goes, and nowhere is this more evident than when looking through someone's phone. It's possible that you won't like what you see.
4. You Wouldn't Allow Them To Do It
You know you wouldn't want your partner going through your stuff if you were going into that shower! Who would do that? Some people obviously don't care as much as others, especially those who have nothing to hide, but no one wants someone invading their privacy in secret.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
This is usually the most effective way of interacting with others. If you wouldn't want someone to do something to you, you shouldn't do it to them.
Instead of trying to look through their phone when they are not present, try being more forthright and honest with them. Inquire if you suspect they are hiding something. Before you break their trust in secret, talk to them. This upfront candor is preferable to secretly going through their personal information when they are not present. However, if you truly trust your partner, you will not have to consider this option.
If you still have the desire to do this, you should seriously consider your relationship. Maybe you're with someone who doesn't want to be with you. Or maybe you're with someone you really don't want to be with! In any case, there is clearly a deeper, underlying issue at hand.

Dating a Nurse: Just because you are dating a nurse it doesn't mean you get sweet treatment on time. Nurses are humans with feelings just like the rest of us. If you are being rude, or are being impatient, or are being inconsiderate, the nurse is just as likely to get upset with you as they are with anyone else. And just because they are a professional, does not mean they are obliged to be emotionally available. If you cannot respect that, then you have no right being in a relationship with a nurse. Being a nurse is stressful enough on their own without having to deal with someone who is demanding or wishy-washy.
