Karaoke Tips (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

It's Friday night, and you've gone out to eat with your friends. They abruptly move to the karaoke section, and the one person you really want to impress invites you to sing. Your palms are sweaty, and a sense of dread begins to creep in. The mere thought of singing in public rather than in your shower sends your stomach churning. What good is karaoke if you can't even sing?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be a great singer to rock a karaoke bar. You'll go from a quivering jelly to a confident Jagger with a little know-how, a good sense of humour, and just enough swagger.

Here are some pointers:

1. Practice breathing like a singer

Karaoke can be intimidating. We tense up when we are stressed. When we are tense, our vocal chords tense up as well, and the sound we produce is less than ideal. Breathing like a singer can help to relieve stress.

The proper way to breathe is to relax, take in deep breaths, almost like filling your stomach, and then use this air to support your voice while singing. After a couple of hours of practice, filling your lower lungs while breathing will become second nature.

2. Perform karaoke at home

If you have a karaoke machine, that's fantastic. Make use of it! Otherwise, your karaoke track and lyrics can usually be found online. Sing while taking a bath, cleaning, or driving; it will benefit you more than you realize, and make sure you not only understand but also memorize the lyrics of the song.

Record yourself singing and listen back, but don't be alarmed the first time you hear yourself singing; it's always strange to hear yourself singing when you first start. Make a video of yourself using a full-length mirror or a smartphone, then watch it. Practice and fine-tune your performance style; become at ease in front of an audience.

3. Select a winning song

When you first start out, choose a song that many people are familiar with and enjoy. When compared to slow numbers, upbeat numbers tend to be more popular with the audience. Songs with long instrumental breaks or songs that are overly long can be awkward for karaoke. It should be a song that you enjoy singing and that falls comfortably within your vocal range.

The audience will have more fun if you choose an upbeat crowd favorite, which will make your job as a performer much easier.

4. Before you begin singing, warm up your voice

Hum quietly along with the songs while others are singing. Humming is an excellent vocal warm-up, and you'll be surprised at how much better you'll sound when your vocal chords are warmed up. There are plenty of other vocal warm-ups you could do, but let's be honest, you don't want to be caught singing “do-re-me” in your cubicle… not a good look.

5. Use humour to combat fear

Remember that everyone is there to have fun, so don't take yourself too seriously. The best way to combat fear is through humour, and if all else fails, remember that someone who can laugh at themselves is just as cool as a serious karaoke star… if not more so.

6. Make use of a little mic technique

When a beginner is scared, he or she unconsciously keeps the microphone a foot or two away from the mouth, making the voice sound bleak. In order to get a nice tone, a more experienced singer keeps the mic close to their mouth. A pro, on the other hand, keeps the mic close to their mouth until they sing louder (often higher) notes. At that point, they pull the microphone away from their mouth by a few inches to compensate for the sudden increase in volume, then return it to their mouth when the louder singing is finished. With a hairbrush, this can be perfected at home.

7. Give an all-out effort

Put on some glitzy clothes and act out your'star' fantasies. Go the distance. Giving an all-out effort is always preferable to sitting back and watching. Be assured. Make no apologies for your performance. Many professional singers hit off notes with startling regularity, but no one notices because their stage presence is so powerful (yes, Mick, I'm looking at you).

8. Be a good listener

Be a good sport and show your support for the other athletes. Clap at the end of each song. A kind word of encouragement can lift anyone's spirits. Don't be alarmed if someone's voice cracks. When you get up to perform, they'll eventually return the favor and cheer you on. As John Lennon once said, “instant karma is going to get you.”

9. Have some fun

This is the most crucial aspect of any performance. Smile, move to the music, and have a good time. The movement will free your voice and allow you to connect with the audience more effectively. The truth is, you're not there to impress anyone; you're there to have a good time. Allow yourself to be vulnerable in front of your friends and audience. Sing to your heart's content.

The most important thing to remember about karaoke is that a great performance does not require a professional singing voice. It's not a competition, and no one expects you to be flawless. It's for amateurs who want to have fun while singing their favorite songs.
