What do you fantasize about? Do you own a business? Are you going to run the 5K? Do you want to travel the world? Considering purchasing a home? What do you spend your days fantasizing about and wishing to be true?

You can achieve any goal you set for yourself. You don't have to sit through another year knowing that you're no closer to your goal than you were the previous year. You have the ability to move from where you are to where you want to go.

You can make your dreams come true by following these nine steps.

1. Perform some stripping

That is, reducing your objectives! Remove all the fluff that obscures the true goal you seek. You can clearly evaluate what you really want by peeling back all the layers surrounding your objective.

Have you ever fantasized about quitting your job? Is your ultimate goal to find a better job, start your own business, or gain more flexibility at work? Depending on your response, the steps you take to prepare to leave your job will be very different.

The more specific you can be about your dream, the easier it will be to map out a plan to get there.

2. Look at the fear in your eyes

When you decide to go after something you want, fear frequently appears.

It's simple to see why. You're venturing out of your comfort zone. You're stepping outside of your comfort zone. As a result, some resistance is normal, and resistance frequently manifests itself in the form of fear.

But don't let fear overcome you. Don't be paralyzed by it. Don't let it keep you daydreaming about your dreams instead of living them.

What you should do is acknowledge your fear whenever it arises. Then consider the following: Which is worse: the fear of venturing beyond your comfort zone into the unknown journey of relentlessly pursuing your dream, or the fear of postponing your dream to alleviate the fear (which also means staying in your current position)?

Anas Nin put it succinctly: “And the day came when the risk of remaining tight in a bud was more painful than the risk of blossoming.”

When you are certain that you are ready to blossom, proceed to the next step.

3. Set fire to your boats

This quote from W.H. Murray's book, The Scottish Himalayan Expedition, explains why commitment is so important: “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the possibility of retreat, and always ineffectiveness.”

There will be numerous obstacles that will arise until you are completely committed to making your dream a reality. And if you aren't fully committed, those distractions will win. To ensure that you remain unwavering in your pursuit of your goal, you must burn your boats.

When Hernan Cortez led his army of men in a conquest of Mexico in the 1500s, he ordered that the boats they arrived in be burned. He did this to prevent anyone from abandoning the mission and returning home. In essence, he ensured commitment to the battle by removing all opportunities to abandon the mission.

So, if you want to visit Thailand, go ahead and book your flight. If you've always wanted to run a 5K, sign up for one now. If you want to buy that house, give your landlord notice that you will not be renewing your lease. Do something concrete that ensures you move forward by removing all opportunities to backtrack.

Then turn away and don't look back. Instead, start stealing.

4. Steal shamelessly

“Good artists copy, great artists steal,” said Pablo Picasso.

You are most likely not the first person to work towards achieving your specific goal. As a result, there is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Immerse yourself in great ideas and techniques that others have proven to be effective.

Find and study people who have achieved success in the area in which you are attempting to succeed. Keep an eye on what they do and don't do, and identify best practices that you can implement. There is a lot to learn, but it will be worthwhile once you realize how much this step will aid you in achieving your goal.

You'll get a healthy dose of inspiration to fuel you along your journey if you spend time studying others who have been successful at what you're trying to do. You can then apply everything you've learned to the next step.

5. Create a strategy

Clarity, commitment, inspiration, and know-how will help you achieve your goals. However, they must be combined with a concrete plan in order to move you closer to realizing your dream.

When you work on a goal without a strategy for achieving it, your efforts are more likely to be disjointed. Without the focus that a plan provides, you are more likely to complete tasks haphazardly and drift around rather than methodically progressing toward your goal. As a result, results are sporadic and less than ideal. You don't want to go down that road.

You must devise a strategy to get from where you are to where you want to go. It will keep you on track and reduce the number of detours that will slow or delay your progress toward your goal.

So, if you want to write your first book, you could plan to get up an hour earlier and write 1,000 words a day before going to work. That way, you'll know what time to set your clock for when you set your alarm each day. When you wake up, you'll know it's time to fire up the laptop and start typing.

Furthermore, one of the benefits of having a plan is that it allows you to track your progress along the way.

6. Establish a deadline

Deadlines have supernatural powers. When they are activated, they stop procrastination in its tracks and jolt you into action, allowing you to get things done.

Even if you have a plan, you may spend a lot of time debating whether you need to learn more, if your plan is perfect, or if you need to check Facebook again (you don't). Then you'll wake up, look at the calendar, and realize that months have passed and you've barely moved an inch toward your goal.

But a deadline changes everything. Because you know you can't afford to miss it, you do whatever it takes to get things done.

So set a deadline for yourself. Then tell someone who will hold you to account. If you come close to missing it, make sure to give them permission to kick your buttocks or provide a sufficiently effective guilt trip.

7. Carry out the work

There is no getting around it. You must put in the effort. You must put your plan into action.

Push yourself to do it when you're in the mood to work. And force yourself to do it even when you don't want to. Here's how to do it:

8. Applaud the progress

A lot of times, your dreams do not come true in a single day. It takes time. And, every now and then, you'll need a little pep talk to keep you going. So, whenever you reach a certain milestone, stop what you're doing, take a breather, and give yourself a high five for all of your hard work.

You deserve it, and while you're not quite where you want to be, you've come a long way from where you started. And that is something to be proud of. It's also fuel to get you a little further.

9. Don't try to do it alone

Change can be difficult. Not only on you, but also on those who interact with you on a regular basis. People whose lives will be impacted by the changes you make in your life.

Consider informing those in your circle of what's going on with you as you work to make your dreams a reality. It will allow them to encourage, support, and hold you accountable as needed.

Depending on your objectives, you may even find someone willing to accompany you on your journey.

It's time to turn your dreams into reality. Your dreams don't have to remain just that. They have the potential to become your reality. However, the majority of the time, dreams come true only as a result of us doing what is required to make them a reality.
