When someone is unhappy, they never see or expect the good in anything, and they always try to make those around them feel just as bad and negative as they do. For some people, being miserable is a way of life because it provides them with sympathy, constant reassurance from other miserable people, and a sense of self defined by the circumstances they find themselves in.

1. They never express gratitude for anything

Being grateful and thankful for anything in the life of someone who is extremely unhappy is a no-no!

When a person expresses gratitude, they should do so from a place of happiness, and they are ten times more likely to be thankful for what they already have rather than what they don't.

A miserable person avoids all expressions of gratitude because it contradicts their beliefs. They believe that counting their blessings is a waste of time, and that life will always provide them with reasons to be ungrateful.

2. They live a very uninteresting life

People who are extremely unhappy live dull, boring, and uninteresting lives. They ensure a mundane existence, with no fun, opportunity, or excitement, and then complain about it!

When life is uninteresting and boring, they begin to believe that they are boring and project that onto others.

When it comes to a miserable person, life is predictable. In this kind of life, TV is a big activity, along with addiction and other mediocre activities like reading tabloid papers and celebrity magazines, none of which stimulate or invigorate the body or mind.

3. They live in the past and glorify it

We've all said things like “it was so much better when I was a kid,” but highly unhappy people tend to live their lives stuck in the past rather than fondly remembering and moving on.

They'll talk about what happened, what they did, and what life was like back then, claiming that things have only gotten worse since.

When a highly unhappy person vilifies the past, they refer to it as being born in the wrong place at the wrong time, or life as a child was unhappy and they never got what they wanted.

Being self-centered and only doing things for personal gain is a highly unhappy person's extreme habit.

Life is about having and gaining more and getting it any way they can, even if it means taking advantage of others. They will surround themselves with like-minded individuals and may even engage in ‘professions' involving criminal activities. They will have no qualms about stealing from others or acting as if they are doing good when their true intentions are not.

5. They are concerned about financial loss

Fear is a useful habit to cultivate if you want to be a miserable person.

Fear prevents unhappy people from doing a job they despise; it forces them to work long, unbearable hours for a company that doesn't care about its employees.

They are stingy and greedy with money; generosity is not even in their vocabulary; and if it is, it is for personal gain.

They will become ill as a result of their financial concerns, become depressed, and lose friends/family as a result. If they could, they'd sit all day worrying about what they'd lose if they took a risk, quit their job, or tried something new.

6. They enjoy starting fights

Every now and then, a depressed person will pick a fight with someone close to them out of nowhere. They usually pick a fight over something ridiculous and unrelated to their current situation.

Second, they anticipate that person responding with kindness and sympathy, and if they do not, they will be quick to point it out. If the other party brings it up again, they will make it appear as if they have no idea what they are talking about and that they never intended for the situation to arise. They'll quickly pretend to be hurt and the victim, despite the fact that they started the fight.

7. They place blame on others and pretend to be the victim

People who are extremely unhappy are excellent at blaming their parents because, after all, they were the ones who brought them into this world and shaped who they are.

They will usually blame the bully who bullied them as a child, a teacher who didn't like them, or a friend who never wanted to do what they wanted to do.

They simply can't get away from the idea of blaming others.

8. They believe that everyone's intentions toward them are always dishonorable

They will interpret any remark, comment, or opinion incorrectly, believing that whoever made it was attempting to insult, belittle, or put them down. They believe that humiliation is at the forefront of most people's intentions, which will leave a highly unhappy person distrustful, resentful, and constantly on the defensive.

Miserable people expect the worst from others and cannot imagine anyone acting on their good intentions.

9. They create a negative identity for themselves and revel in it

People who are extremely unhappy allow their perceived emotional problem to consume their very core.

For example, if they suffered from anxiety, depression, or some form of grief, they would define themselves as a person. They also attempt to make everyone aware of what is wrong with them. They make this the focal point of their lives, constantly talking about it and bringing it up at every opportunity.

10. They become involved in other people's drama

They are the focal point of all the drama in their lives and the lives of others. Family and community dramas are examples of this.

They want to be the person to whom people will turn to share their misery and help carry the drama to new heights, exaggerating situations and consoling others with their own sorry stories about how life has dealt them a cruel hand.

A miserable person's mantra is that life stinks and that all bad things happen to them.

Optimism for the future is nonsense, and being positive will be futile. To them, their marriage will most likely fail, their children will not love them, their house will fall apart, and their job will be an unbearable chore.

12. They are only concerned with themselves

People who are extremely unhappy concentrate on themselves, their needs, and their problems because they believe that no one else's problems or struggles are as severe as theirs.

They are constantly concerned with why they do things and behave in certain ways, while analyzing their flaws and chewing over their problems.

13. They are extremely critical of everything

Nothing is good enough, nothing works, and nothing can make a very unhappy person happy. They are critical of everything, whether or not people agree with them.

Miserable people always speak up before everyone else. They criticize something that someone enjoys in order to ensure that their point is heard. They enjoy antagonizing others and believe that they are always correct while everyone else is always wrong.

People are unhappy because they are worried. Miserable people refuse to listen to reason and are obsessed with situations and things over which they have no control.

Worrying adds to their misery, so it's only natural that these people are anxious by nature.

15. They are envious of the success of others

People who are unhappy will not openly admit that they are envious of other people's success. They will, however, diminish other people's accomplishments and successes by emphasizing the negatives or downplaying the news, so that the other person's excitement is quickly deflated.

When someone is happy, a highly unhappy person will go into great detail about everything that could possibly go wrong.
