I was preparing for an important presentation when I realized I had done everything I could to prepare. What I needed was a good old-fashioned pep talk, not a fourth or fifth run-through of my slides.

The only problem was that I only had five minutes before my meeting with the stakeholders. The motivational speech would have to come from me.

So I went to the bathroom, shut the door, and examined myself in the mirror. At first, talking to my reflection felt silly. But the more I pumped myself up, the more confident I became.

“I've done my research on this subject, and I'm ready to share it,” I explained. “I'm a good communicator. People are interested in hearing from me. My ideas are important.”

I'll admit that there were some awkward stutters and sweaty palms during the presentation. But I remained confident throughout the thirty-minute PowerPoint presentation. Looking back, I know I owe it to my positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations, also known as mantras, are empowering statements that can serve as motivation, encouragement, and reassurance.

There is scientific proof that they work. As a result, positive affirmations for work can help you increase your productivity.

One study published in 2016 discovered that self-affirmation can both alleviate pain and assist people in maintaining balance during threats, including a high-stakes PowerPoint presentation.

It is not easy to achieve your objectives. Every time I give a high-stakes presentation or have a difficult but productive conversation with a client or colleague, I have to relearn that. However, facing these frightening scenarios courageously propels you toward the career and life you desire, while also strengthening you in the process.

Don't feel quite brave yet? Not a problem. Take your own hand in yours and give yourself the pep talk you wish someone else would give you. You've done difficult things before, and you can do difficult things now.

2. I am driven and motivated to achieve my objectives

Perhaps you're not invested in the project you're working on right now. Perhaps you've completely lost interest in your job. Whatever is draining your energy, you can re-establish your motivation and direct it toward your strategic vision.

Having said that, doing the right thing isn't always easy. To remind yourself that integrity has a big payoff, even if it doesn't seem like it right now and even if the people around you aren't acting with the same honesty and values you are.

My college mentor gave me the best advice I've ever received:

Never be too self-conscious to ask questions.

Since then, I've prioritized asking questions about whatever piques my interest, even if it makes me appear foolish. This has been a huge help in my career, particularly when I'm feeling stuck or uninspired.

Whether you're curious about how something works or don't understand someone's instructions, keep in mind that the answer to your question could mean the difference between you and your career objectives.

So, make it a habit to remind yourself that humility isn't a flaw, but rather a sign that you're eager to learn and grow into the person you want to be.

8. No one does my job better than I do

It's never been easier to keep up with what your college roommate or old colleague is up to thanks to LinkedIn and other social media outlets, which means it's also easier than ever to feel like you don't measure up. Imposter syndrome is one manifestation of insecurity.

If you've ever felt like you don't deserve your role or, worse, that someone else would be better at it, focus on affirming that you belong exactly where you are.

Remind yourself that you are in your specific role for a reason, and that your experiences, skills, and relationships make you the best person for the job, regardless of what anyone else is doing.

9. My work is meaningful and has a positive impact on people's lives

It's easy to lose sight of why your work matters. Positive affirmations for work, on the other hand, can help you get back on track.
