Every year, many of us may have launched initiatives in the form of resolutions to prepare for change. We are frequently inspired to reflect, look back, and take stock of our lives, determining what is and isn't working for us.

Changes we seek may be small and temporary, such as losing those holiday love handles or decluttering the garage. We may also have a strong desire or need for more profound, long-term transformation, such as changing careers, quitting a long-term habit, or relocating to a new town.

Whether we seek personal transformation and growth on purpose or have it thrust upon us, we can greatly improve our chances of success by preparing for the changes we seek.

In this article, we'll look at 9 ways to get ready for change. These pointers will assist you in navigating both small and large transitions, putting you firmly on the path to the life of your dreams.

1. Recognize the Logical Levels of Change

It's critical to understand how change works so you know what to expect throughout the process.

The Five Logical Levels are used in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to understand what is involved in making personal change. This is a straightforward model that provides five useful windows through which to examine any problem.

Here is a summary of the five Logical Levels:

  • What is your identity? What are your responsibilities in life?
  • Beliefs – What motivates you to do what you do? What are your core beliefs and values?
  • Capabilities – What do you do? What are your capabilities and strategies?
  • What are you doing with your behavior? What are your current patterns of behavior?
  • Environment – Where, when, and with whom are your behaviors displayed?

Changes and factors at each level have an impact on those above and below it to varying degrees. For example, changing your environment may have an impact on the levels above it, but changing a belief you hold will almost certainly have an impact on the levels below it.

To shift a behavior, which is typically the level we aim for when we decide to prepare for something in our lives, we often need to become aware of and adjust our underlying beliefs and sense of self, build our capabilities to include new skills, and possibly support the shift by changing our environment.

Let's walk through each level with an example: you're unhappy in your current job as a Chartered Accountant and have decided to return to school to retrain as a Registered Massage Therapist.

  • Identity – Is your purpose to be happy and fulfilled, or to be the family's successful breadwinner?
  • Beliefs – Do you place a high value on helping others? How important do you think income and status are in comparison to happiness and satisfaction? Do you believe you have the ability to make the necessary changes?
  • Capabilities – How will you acquire the skills required to work as a massage therapist? What kind of training will you require? What soft skills will you require that you do not currently possess (for example, communication, making people feel at ease)?
  • Behaviors – Aside from physically leaving your current job, what other habits might need to be modified? Will you have to forego some luxuries in order to make the transition? Are your beliefs consistent with the changes you'll need to make?
  • Environment – Does your current environment (e.g., your spouse, boss) support the necessary changes? Will you be able to study and work where you are now, or will you have to relocate? When is the most ideal time to make the switch?

2. Define Your Desired Outcome

As you prepare for change, take the time to clearly define what you want to achieve in terms of what it will look like, when you want it to happen, how long you want it to take, and a basic outline of how you will accomplish it.

This is especially important for those who like to dive right in after making a decision; enthusiasm is wonderful and will serve you well, but you also need a clear path and a solid understanding of what you want.

3. Make a list of the advantages and disadvantages

Fear and skepticism are unavoidable when there is significant change. Even when we know a decision is right for us and will benefit us in the long run, we may find ourselves drawn back to the familiar and comforting behaviors, habits, jobs, and situations we are attempting to leave behind.

Make a list of why you want to change. What are your deeper motivations for making this decision? What specific advantages will you gain as a result of your change? What are the negative ramifications of not changing?

Make a detailed list of your responses to these questions and keep it somewhere you'll be able to refer to it frequently. When doubt creeps in or motivation wanes, your list will serve as a motivating reminder of why you're doing all of this in the first place.

4. Visualize the End Result

As you prepare for change, visualizing the end result is a great way to create a richly imagined successful future outcome as positive motivation on your journey. From your imagined place of success, you can then ask yourself how you got there, creatively imagining yourself overcoming any obstacles and challenges from a position of guaranteed success.

5. Examine the environment

An ecology check is simply putting your desired end result under the microscope of investigation:

  • What potential stumbling blocks or conflicts could arise?
  • What attitudes, habits, or behaviors might undermine your efforts?
  • How will bringing about the desired change affect the people in your life (family, friends)?
  • Is it necessary for you to make any sacrifices? Are you prepared to create them?
  • What changes will you need to make in your life in order to achieve your goal?
  • Is the outcome consistent with your core values and beliefs?

Asking yourself these critical questions before embarking on a major life change can save you time, effort, and heartache, as well as allow you to make any necessary adjustments ahead of time.

6. Increase Your Assets

Make a list of any current assets you have, such as money and other resources, skills, training, talents, and supportive people.

Make a list of the assets you still need to acquire in order to successfully implement the change ahead of you, such as new mindsets and behaviors, training and education, mentorship, and physical assets such as living and working spaces, loans, or transportation.

As you prepare for change, make a plan for acquiring any skills or resources that are currently lacking.

7. Make contingency plans for potential stumbling blocks

After you've visualized your desired future outcome and analyzed it for potential challenges and obstacles, you can devise plans to address those possibilities.

You don't have to go into too much detail; just plan ahead of time how you'll handle any bumps in the road.

For example, if you anticipate opposition to your life decision from those around you, you might prepare a brief and succinct response to the question of why you're doing it.

8. Create a Plan of Action

Even if we want change, it is easy to become overwhelmed when we begin to prepare for it. Any worthwhile life change necessitates letting go of familiarity and venturing outside of our comfort zones, which can be a terrifying experience.

A well-defined action plan will not only help you stay on track with your progress, but it will also provide you with reassuring structure in the midst of what may feel like chaos at times.

When developing your strategy, break it down into manageable daily tasks and action items, and set several attainable milestones along the way.

9. Maintain Your Calm and Carry On

Remember to be gentle with yourself. Making significant personal and life changes can be difficult, and as with any journey, there will be ups and downs along the way.
