Should I Go Back to My Old Job (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

Many employees have asked themselves, “Should I go back to my old job?” Maybe the new job wasn't as great as you expected, and you can now see your old situation more clearly. Perhaps you've gained some experience that has led to a new opportunity with people you respect. Perhaps your personal circumstances have shifted.

Before deciding whether or not to return to your previous job, ask yourself the five questions listed below

1. What prompted your decision to leave in the first place?

It is critical to determine whether the reasons for your departure still exist. For example, if you had a disagreement with your boss, will you be working with him or her again? Is your organization's culture toxic, and are you better prepared to deal with it this time? Before returning to your old job, you must assume that nothing (and no one) has changed.

2. Have You Burned All of Your Bridges?

Take an accurate inventory of how your departure was received. Was your overall demeanor professional? Did you go out of your way to ensure that your job was in good hands, and was this noticed and appreciated? You want to be absolutely certain that there are no lingering resentments before returning to your old job.

3. With whom will you be collaborating?

As a former employee, you have the advantage of knowing the organization better than any new hire, and you must capitalize on this insider knowledge. Is the department with which you'll be collaborating productive, efficient, and interpersonally mature? Check to see if your new manager has a good reputation and if your team members are easy to work with.

4. Will You Have to Begin Again?

You must have worked for a while at this organization to earn respect and increased levels of responsibility. You've also gained more experience since your last job. Will your new position reflect these changes, or will all of your previous achievements be in vain? No matter how desperate you are, do not accept a job that is a step backward.

5. Is the Job Meaningful?

When deciding whether or not to take a new job, consider how the work will be done on a daily basis. Is it going to be a challenge you can get your teeth into? Will you be able to make a genuine difference in the organization? If red tape or endless consensus building has previously stymied your progress, it is possible that it will do so again.

Many of us leave organizations because, as the old adage goes, “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” Sometimes it takes a change in circumstances to realize how fortunate we were. However, it is critical to evaluate what we are getting ourselves into objectively and not rush into a boomerang.
