Steps to Success (The Ultimate Guide + Image Quotes)

What are the steps to achieving success? Many people will say that it all depends on how you define success. However, a definition is not what you are looking for.

You know exactly what you want and are eager to learn how to make your dreams a reality.

Your main issue is time and the demands of daily life. There are bills to pay for every person who delays their path to success. Because you need to pay the bills right now, your invention goes uninvented, or your book goes unwritten.

It's difficult to find motivation to work on your dream after you've finished working; you're tired, and you just don't feel like it.

There is no single key to success; rather, there are multiple keys to multiple doors and multiple steps, each of which leads to the next. To get started on your own success journey, use the steps to success listed below.

1. Don't Make It a Motivational Issue

Isn't it true that achieving important goals is all about personal motivation? How can you expect to succeed if you are not motivated in the long run?

The issue with motivation is as follows:

It is subject to whims and emotions. You will not achieve results if the only thing motivating you is an internal desire to achieve results. Then there will be times when your desire is strong but you are preoccupied with another task.

Aytekin Tank, the founder of JotForm, suggests relying on “systems” rather than intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is self-motivation to act, and Tank observes that “there are probably moments when you don't want to take action.”

Instead of relying solely on desire, create a system and stick to it regardless of how you feel. Here's a quick rundown of how Tank's system works:

Determine two or three areas in which you want to concentrate your efforts. All of these things should be related to your main goal in life.

Set aside a specific time each day for productive focus.

Say no to any activity that does not fall into one of your priority areas.

Allow yourself a certain amount of leeway. If you can't bring yourself to sit down and write, read a book to help inform your writing or spend time cataloging your surroundings.

The difficult part for many of us is saying “no” to those inevitable and appealing distractions. Tank suggests focusing on what you enjoy about your dream. Why are you doing this in the first place? Concentrate on what makes your goals outstanding.

2. Model After Others

Ignoring directions from locals in a city you're visiting for the first time is the same as not learning from successful people. It's illogical.

You need mentors no matter how daring you are or how much of a rebel you want to be. Learn how they did it, start with the basics, and then look for ways to set yourself apart.

According to Ohio University, some of the most successful self-made business owners share the following characteristics:

Simple goals and plans

Working with and relying on people who will help you achieve your goals, and dismissing those who will not.

tenacity and perseverance

Preference for prioritizing and streamlining critical, transparent communications.

When possible, I try to save money.

Ability to make decisions based on a combination of facts, people's stories, and emotions.

If you can't decide who to emulate, the traits listed above are good to cultivate.

More on cultivating grit and passion can be found in Angela Lee Duckworth's TED Talk:

3. Network in the Correct Manner

There is no doubt that you require the assistance of others in order to succeed. That being said, there is a proper way to build your network as you progress through the steps to success.

If you approach networking incorrectly, you will be frustrated, if not hurt. Never underestimate the emotional risk you are taking when establishing a network.

It may appear intimidating, but effective networking is made easier when you follow a set of rules. When you begin your networking journey, keep the following points in mind:

Be of assistance: Help others, be kind, and do favors—that is the Golden Rule of networking. Then, stay in touch with those you assist.

Be consistent: Dependability, consistency, grit—show people you can be consistent and cultivate an image that reflects your unwavering dedication to your passion.

Be genuine: Don't connect simply because the person will benefit you. Make connections based on your genuine curiosity about who that person is and what they do.

Be truthful: sugarcoating your words will not work. A great communicator is distinguished by honesty, sincerity, and forthright communication.

Pay close attention: Pay close attention to what others are saying and don't waste words. The more you talk about yourself, the less you learn about the other person.

Be present in the moment, pay attention to what people say and do, and cultivate relationships with people who are passionate and purposeful.

4. Do the Right Thing

You know you need to practice to excel at anything—your teachers, parents, and coaches instilled this in you as a child. However, chances are they did not provide you with an accurate picture of proper practice.

After all, this is a discussion about how to make your dreams a reality. Your goal isn't to be mediocre or competent; it's to nail something to the wall with excellence, finality, and precision.

Practice doing it correctly, and then practice it again and again.

The author of Doug Lemov's book Practice Perfect (co-written with Erica Woolway and Katie Yezzi) emphasizes that how you practice is more important than how much you practice. He offers some helpful advice on how to train yourself to succeed:

Determine the proper method and practice it several times.

The most important and effective things should be practiced the most. According to the 80/20 rule, 20% of correct practice yields 80% of results.

Repetition will ingrain the activity so deeply that you won't have to think about it later.

Repeat until you can think creatively while doing rote tasks.

Set an objective for each practice session to make it “manageable and measurable.”

Concentrate on what you are already good at and continue to practice it.

If you make a mistake, correct it by going back and doing it correctly again and again.

It is extremely beneficial to have someone provide feedback when practicing to perfection. If you don't have a mentor or coach, look for information in libraries and on the internet.

5. Accept Failure as a Natural Part of the Process

You will be sorely disappointed if you expect to do nothing but succeed. In fact, those who avoid failure are frequently among the most unsuccessful.

Anything worthwhile is difficult, and failure is an inevitable part of the process. Failure teaches you valuable lessons about what not to do as you progress through the steps to success.

Even if you can't pinpoint what went wrong, external/environmental factors are likely to have played a role in your failure.

Now is your chance to investigate what those factors could be. When people fail, they must consider the following:

What were the external/environmental/societal factors that got in the way of my progress?

What can I do differently the next time?

Were there any issues that I caused that were not caused by outside factors? What motivated me to make them?

Who can I turn to for assistance this time?

Analysis and learning are not always easy, which is why you should expect to fail several times.

Failure will become less common as you practice each step of your process with the proper method in mind.

6. Establish Realistic Goals

Realistic goals and objectives are checkpoints on your path to success. If you want to be a rock star or a celebrity, that is not something you can achieve overnight.

It will not become a reality unless you set realistic goals that bring you closer to it.

According to one study, goal conflicts and ambivalence about goals lead to higher levels of depression and anxiety.

In other words, you may have a big dream of success, but your immediate, small goals may clash, and your mental health suffers as a result.

Furthermore, you may be conflicted about your current goals because they do not reflect what you truly value. Examine your objectives and ask yourself what you truly want from life.

7. Determine What Is Causing Conflicts in Your Life

You may be experiencing difficulties in certain areas of your life, causing your dreams and steps to success to fade into the background.

Anxiety disorders affect approximately 18% of people at some point in their lives, but only 37% seek treatment[6]. Anxiety and other common disorders, such as depression, can impair your ability to perform at work and have a negative impact on your personal life. As a result, your concentration wanes as your disorder takes center stage.

Those who suffer from anxiety frequently obsess over the future. The road to your dreams will not open until you focus on your short-term goals and objectives. Begin goal setting with immediate steps to make things go faster and easier—for example, I'll write 500 words a day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—while focusing on the action in front of you.

Consider mindfulness meditation as well to help with anxiety relief.

8. Remove Distractions

Distractions play a significant role in goal conflict. Surprisingly, you find yourself scrolling through your Facebook news feed while at work. You decide to go drinking despite the fact that you have an important conference the next morning.

Unfortunately, Facebook and drinking have nothing to do with advancing your career, but improving your work has everything to do with achieving your goal.

Distracting yourself can be as simple as installing a productivity app on your phone or tablet. Alternatively, you may need to physically remove distractions from your workspace in order to concentrate—whatever it takes.

9. Allow for Rest and Relaxation

You must eliminate distractions while focusing on objectives, but you must also allow yourself time to refresh as you progress through the steps to success.

The best kind of downtime rejuvenates your brain. Take walks in nature, play a game with friends, exercise, read a book—do anything you enjoy that is not harmful to your health.

10. Break Down Your Activities

That's all you're doing when you're working on objectives or networking. You are not responding to work emails when you are relaxing.

Compartmentalization allows you to focus more intensely and increases your passion.

Final Thoughts

The common thread running through these steps to success is focus.

Set simple goals that will bring you closer to what appears to be a fantastic dream. Concentrate completely on each goal as you work on it.

The key to concentration is repetition. Each small step will add up to something significant in the end.
