There was a time when I would never cry. There was a time when I would never admit to feeling afraid. If something bad happened in my life, I would show my face with the biggest smile, and no one would know. If they did, no one would notice how much it bothered me. I'd be that bubbly, outgoing personality everyone knew. I was a tough cookie. Nobody or nothing could ever break me. I didn't need anyone and could take care of myself. Why? Because I was powerful. Nowadays, I look back at the girl I used to be and realize how wrong I was.
Pain. We've all experienced it in some way. There are two kinds of pain: physical pain and emotional pain. Both are diametrically opposed yet eerily similar. There can be pain that we feel and then heal from, or pain that can harm us for the rest of our lives. Childhood issues can have long-term consequences if we do not seek to learn, understand, and be aware of them. A car accident that paralyzes us can have long-term consequences. What I do know is that both can expose us to danger.

Don't Be Afraid of Being Vulnerable
We can be made vulnerable in a variety of ways. For example, when you first start dating someone and are really into them, but you're not sure if they're the right person. What if they cause me harm? What if they lie? What if they don't share your sentiments? What if they aren't who they claim to be?
What about when you're going through a major life event, such as a breakup, job loss, or even death? These things happen to everyone. It's a natural part of life. Why bother bothering anyone with your problems? Why mope around and be depressed when everyone else has been through it?
What about that business idea you've always had but were too afraid to pursue? What if everyone mocks me and my concept? What if no one wants my product or service? What if I'm not up to the task? What if I don't succeed?
Fear. We are all aware that this is the one factor that can prevent us from achieving our objectives. Every day, we see quotes on the internet. We read about it, hear about it, and have a subconscious understanding of it. Fear demonstrates vulnerability. Why would we want to be vulnerable and put ourselves out there when we can happily continue doing whatever we're doing and be perfectly fine? Isn't it comfortable?
Most of us have heard the expressions “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone” and “A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.” However, pause for a moment to consider this. Why would these be famous sayings if they were not true? Why would successful people use this as a quote?
Let's go back to that person you've been dating and are starting to have feelings for. Why not express your feelings to them? Why not get to know them better, take the risk, and see if it's worthwhile? If you never ask, you will always get a no. We all want to find that special someone with whom we can share our lives. What could possibly go wrong? They don't share your sentiments? Great, now you don't have to waste your time and can pursue other opportunities. They didn't turn out to be who you thought they were? Leave the moment you realize they aren't the person they've painted themselves to be. You tried, you gave it your best shot, but it wasn't meant to be. At the very least, you're aware, and I'm sure you learned something from the experience.
So you've just been fired, dumped, or someone close to you has died. You don't have to tell the world (or everyone you meet) about your problems, but you also don't have to keep it all to yourself and suffer in silence. True friends will always be there for you, which is one of the best aspects of friendship. There are people out there who want you to be happy.
Yes, everyone has these experiences, but we all know how painful they can be at the time. Have a cry, take some time for yourself, go do something you enjoy, or lock yourself away for days and watch movies. Do whatever you believe is best for you to heal. It is acceptable to be in pain. We are all human. Allow yourself to feel and let it all out. This is the only way to truly progress. Time, as cliche as it may sound, truly heals. You may never forget, but it won't hurt as much in the long run.
What about your business concept? Isn't it something you're interested in? Does it pique your interest when you think about it? Would you go for it if money wasn't an issue? Consider how great it would be to be successful in your business. So, why not give it a shot? Why not take that first step? You'll never know if you don't try. So what if you don't succeed? At the very least, you had the courage to pursue your dreams. That is something that not many people can say. What if you fail, but the failure leads to something better?
What if, on the other hand, you succeed? Consider this: If you look into the backgrounds of successful people, you will discover that many of them failed more than once or twice. The difference between successful people and others is their drive. Mistakes demonstrate that you are trying. Who cares what other people think? Isn't it better to fail at trying to do something great than to succeed at doing nothing? You're one step ahead of the rest of them, and you're at least trying.
Vulnerability equals strength
Putting yourself out there, taking that leap, and showing vulnerability, in my opinion, requires far more courage and strength than remaining silent and doing nothing. Accepting and admitting that you are in pain is a sign of strength. Allowing yourself to feel and acknowledge your problem is preferable to holding it in and pretending everything is fine. It takes a lot more bravery to put yourself out there than it does to keep doing the same thing every day.
Telling your crush that you like them takes guts. It takes bravery to open your heart and allow someone into your life. Taking a risk like this is preferable to passing up an opportunity to be with someone amazing because you remained silent, or because you were afraid of falling for them and getting hurt, so you ran away.
It demonstrates strength to admit that you are in pain and struggling to cope. When you can swallow your pride and ask for help, you demonstrate strength. It is perfectly natural to go through difficult times and not always be on a high. Putting yourself out there and launching a business idea takes guts. You may be vulnerable and open to failure, but you may also succeed.
There will always be ups and downs in life, but we can learn to ride the wave. Take a chance! Put yourself out there, pursue your dreams, and give yourself permission to fall in love. Being vulnerable and stepping outside of your comfort zone may be the best thing you ever do.
