It's like when Glenda the Good Witch tells Dorothy at the end of The Wizard of Oz that she had what it took all along. That's how you are. You have what it takes inside you right now. Your journey to wherever you want to go begins within. Gratitude is a gift that keeps on giving, and it can bring you joy.

Taking things for granted, on the other hand, can sap that joy. You lose your sense of power and purpose. You no longer stop to smell the roses. You don't even bother looking at them. You let go of the minor details, and the rest follows.
However, when you are filled with gratitude and joy, you thrive. You discover yourself. You are aware of who you are. When you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, you allow yourself to breathe. You learn to let go and appreciate what you have rather than cling to what no longer serves you. And it's all within your grasp.
Here are five reasons why taking things for granted can sap your happiness
When you are lacking in gratitude, you may find yourself only thinking about yourself. Your actions may be more self-centered. Because you are only concerned with your own needs, you may isolate yourself from those you love and care about. This action causes you to become more self-serving and to live for the fulfillment of the ego rather than feeling true selflessness and joy.
When you put others first, you feel less alone and happier. You have support, understanding, and compassion because you give it to others. What you give returns to you in some way. And that is sufficient.
If you practice more selfless behavior and value those around you, you will be more likely to lend a helping hand. Then you'll realize you're not alone.
You now have more reasons to live. You now have more people with whom to share your experiences. You have goals that can help the world.
Empathy has the power to change people's lives. Being kind and considerate of those around you can transform your own life. But you can't do any of that if you don't look at what you've got. You must lead with empathy, not ego, and you will no longer take things for granted in your life. Then you can both give and receive joy.
2. Negative Feelings
According to Psychology Today, lead gratitude researcher Robert Emmons discovered that gratitude decreases depression while increasing happiness.
It is directly related to your mental health and the level of happiness you experience.
his means that, on a psychological level, gratitude can improve your mood and overall well-being. Dopamine and serotonin are released in the brain, which causes you to feel happy. It does not, however, take the place of a psychiatrist's recommendations if you do require medication, but it does help anyone who tries it to live a better life.
It's normal to have negative feelings from time to time. However, when you feel this way the majority of the time, you become joyless and aimless. You lose track of who you are and what you stand for. Your goals become less about what you need and more about what others expect of you.
A simple act of appreciation, on the other hand, can change the course of your life and your emotional well-being. You have feelings for a reason—they are intended to show you what you require. And if you don't pay attention to them, they get louder.
Perhaps the lessons your emotions are trying to teach you are to stop chasing after whatever comes your way and instead look at what you have. Consider how far you've come.
When you don't live with gratitude, your mental health suffers. You may experience depression or become dissatisfied with your current situation. You could be stressed, not living for the right reasons, or overwhelmed. You may only see your own problems.
However, when you choose gratitude, you also choose joy. You focus on the positive and let it in. Gratitude is a natural mood booster. You decide to stay when you see what you have. You make the decision to continue fighting for yourself. You have a more positive attitude and way of life. This is beneficial to you in general.
This has been shown to help with depression. Anxiety, worry, stress, and anger can all be alleviated with this. You can step back and say, “OK, this is what's good.” That is all you need to do to change the situation.
Then, when you make decisions, you have that good with you in your heart. You feel lighter and more optimistic as you look up. You are not required to carry everything that you have been carrying. Sometimes it's good to put it all down and focus on what's most important.
3. Possibility of Insecurity
Nobody can help you if you don't recognize your own worth. It is up to you to determine what you have. It is up to you to understand that while you may have flaws, they do not define who you are.
Your flaws are just another aspect of you. They are not meant to detract from you in any way. Your strength stems from your individuality in life.
Take the path that is uniquely yours. Don't compete or compare yourself. Simply be yourself. Make a list of what you have as well as what you would like someone to say to you.
Use positive affirmations, for example:
- I am deserving.
- I am perfect in my flaws.
- I am filled with wonder and joy.
- I am aware of who I am.
Add to the list, and you'll find yourself more capable of dealing with anything. You'll notice that you're naming your victories rather than focusing on your flaws. This allows you to summon more power.
You must not take the journey you've been on for granted. You are still standing here because of you, not anything else. That has to be worth something.
You can feel secure because you know you have a lot to offer. You have the option of pleasing others or pleasing yourself. Finally, you must live with yourself. And if you can accomplish that, you've won.
Your emotional well-being will no longer suffer as a result. Authenticity is created through appreciation. Don't worry about pretending to be someone you're not. Pay attention to who you are and find some worth in that. That is where you will find happiness.
4. It is possible that resilience will be stifled
What recent accomplishments can you be proud of? Do you see the power in doing so, and do you believe that anything is possible?
Resilience can be stifled if you don't see the good in yourself, the tools you have around you, the people you can rely on, and the opportunities that are available to you.
If you decide to continue, take comfort in knowing that you can be flawed while still following your path and making a difference.

See what's around you, and you'll realize that, despite struggle and adversity, you've got this. This is something you can do. You have the ability to master this. “I am the captain of my soul,” William Ernest Henley writes in his poem Invictus.
If you're having trouble, keep in mind that others would gladly trade places with you. That doesn't mean the path you're on isn't difficult. It simply means that you should be grateful for what you have before it's too late.
Nothing can shake you if you know what you're working with. That is how you find meaning in your life, no matter what. That is how you let the joy in.
5. You spend less time “in the moment
When was the last time you went to see a sunrise or a sunset? When was the last time you felt the rain on your skin? When was the last time you smiled at someone you didn't know? When was the last time you truly felt something—when you truly felt alive?
If it's been a while, it's time to reconnect with the present. Make the most of it. Because right now is all you have, and you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. You can only give what you have right now.
You are less “in the moment” if you take things for granted. You're not as present. You miss out on the important things, as well as the people, places, events, and things that are going on, because you are not appreciating them. You miss out on the simple pleasures of life.
When you take things for granted, the memories that could have been made fade away, the people you could have held close leave your side, and the chances to be your bravest, best self vanish. This is due to the fact that you must choose to be here.
This is about being mindful. According to Psych Central, gratitude is about being mindful, observing yourself without judgment in whatever you are going through, and learning to show yourself some grace.
Gratitude is a daily meditation that begins with a simple gratitude list. What do you have right now that you can put to good use? You can also ground yourself by focusing on your five senses and noticing the small details that you were previously missing.
Living in the present moment provides you with what you require. If you take the time to feel each moment, you will be able to see more clearly. Gratitude can be found in any situation, even just being present.
It does not imply that it will be simple. It simply means that you were present, and people will remember you based on how you lived your life. It is not a panacea, but it is a start.
So, stop avoiding the sunrise and sunset. Stop rushing past the beautiful scenery. Stop ignoring the people who love and rely on you. Everything is happening right now. That is why gratitude works. It's what keeps us sane. We know who we are in the midst of the world's madness because we have that joy. That joy is also yours.
Today is a good day to be happy. Simply be grateful rather than take things for granted. Then you'll have everything you need. That's when life happens—when you wake up feeling your best because you know what you've got and what it took to get here.
The world will continue to spin. But if you take a moment to look around every now and then, you will notice everything you have.
