The awkward silence is one of the most difficult problems you may encounter when trying to make new friends. This situation is so unpleasant that it may force you to avoid meeting new people in the first place, but there is a way to avoid it.

I used to struggle so much with this that I thought it would never be solved. I even thought it had something to do with my DNA… but I was proven wrong when I discovered how to solve it.

You can meet, talk to, and get to know pretty much anyone you like if you know how to keep those words flowing—creating great possibilities for friendship, fun, and shared activities that you would otherwise have missed out on.

Why Do You Run Out of Things to Say? After researching this extensively, I discovered patterns of behavior that can prevent you from having great conversations with others. Filtering is one of these common behaviors—holding back from saying something until you've “checked” with yourself to ensure that what you're about to say is cool, impressive, smart, and interesting.

What effect does this have on your ability to converse? It annihilates it!

Another issue is that people do not learn how to get in the mood for conversation. If you've spent the entire day working or studying analytical or logical subjects and don't know how to switch gears, it can take a long time to warm up and begin socializing with others.

You can easily overcome this by learning a few new skills, such as those listed below. Once you've done that, you'll find it much easier to meet new people and make new friends.

How to Keep Conversations Going Let's start with a couple of simple, yet effective techniques for being a great conversationalist: Technique #1 No Filtering This is the reflex that allows you to say whatever comes to mind. There will be no filtering, no asking yourself, “Will I sound cool if I say this?” ”. None of the above.

The best way to practice this is to start with people you know a little bit—do you dare to try it? It's liberating to realize that you can say whatever you want and no one will judge you for it.

You're fine as long as you don't say anything that could land you in jail! People don't care how “awesome” what you're saying is because they're too concerned with how THEY come across. Do you get it? If that's the case, let's move on… Technique #2 “Interesting, tell me more!” ” This works 99.9% of the time. It's a tried-and-true method that works especially well for beginners. People like it when they know you're interested in what they're saying, so if you show some interest, they'll stick around and want to talk to you even more.

Every single “oh! That's interesting…”, “Hmm, I've never heard of that before,” “Hmm, cool!” “Expressions are reactionary bits of conversation that demonstrate to the other person that you are truly listening, which is very flattering to them.

Technique #3: Stories from all over Everyone knows that stories energize conversations, but most people only discuss stories from their own lives. When speaking with someone, you don't have to draw from your own experience: you can use stories from anywhere, from stories that happened to people you know to those you heard on the radio, TV, or in magazines. How can you incorporate the stories into your conversation? The key is to recognize that you can use them in the first place. You've already heard them, and the more interesting or strange they are, the more difficult they are to forget, so you're fine.

They are not lost in your brain. When someone mentions anything related to any of them, simply tell the story, even if it isn't from your own life. It can be any ridiculous story, short or long, interesting or completely awkward—just use it!

People enjoy conversing with people who can openly share their feelings in such a way. These techniques should get you started, but if you want to take it to the next level—to the point where you can just have fun talking to anyone, meet the right people you want in your life, and make friends with them quickly—I recommend that you spend some time learning more about how conversations work.

If you do this, you will naturally make conversations far more interesting, avoiding all awkward silences that may prevent you from meeting the right friends you would like to have around.

The Bottom Line Now that you know how to keep a conversation going, the next thing you should do is try out one of these techniques the next time you talk to someone.

Don't overwhelm yourself by attempting to use all of these tricks at once; instead, focus on one at a time. When you've mastered one of the tricks, you'll be more confident in using the others in your upcoming conversations!
