It is not uncommon to experience at least one period in our lives when we feel uninspired and stuck in our current situation. Although this can be a stressful experience for many people, it is actually a sign that you have reached a major crossroads in your life. You've realized that you're unhappy with the way things are and that you desperately want things to change.

Don't interpret this sensation as a sign that you haven't made any progress. Change your perspective to see this as a learning opportunity that will help you become the person you want to be so that you can live the life you want to live!
That being said, recognizing that you are trapped is the easy part. The most difficult aspect of change is implementing it.

1. Recognize Your Current Situation
Recognizing your current situation is the key to moving forward in life. While we all have thoughts that our lives could be better and that we could be responsible for these changes, we rarely acknowledge and sit with these feelings, which only serves to bring us back to where we started.
To get to where you want to go, you must first recognize where you are and allow yourself to fully experience that feeling. Action is sparked by awareness. You can use your dissatisfaction with your life as motivation to get to where you want to go if you become aware of it.

2. Dig deep within yourself to find your hopes and dreams
If you are feeling stuck in life, it means that you are currently dissatisfied with something in your life. The question remains, however, as to what aspect of your life you are dissatisfied with.
The abandonment of your hopes and dreams is one of the most significant contributors to your overall lack of happiness in life. We have all given up on dreams that we used to believe were true when we were younger at some point in our lives. We then settle for things that were not initially desired, resulting in a life that provides us with less than we expected.
The good news is that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.
With that in mind, I'd like to ask you: what were some of the things you wanted when you were younger? Do you aspire to be a singer? Did you always want to be an astronaut or a world traveler?
Whatever it is, make a note of it. It is never too late to make your dreams come true.
3. Determine which aspects of your life require the most attention
Now that we've moved past the hopes and dreams section, it's time to concentrate on what you can do right now.
Life is demanding, and if we are not constantly focused on maintaining each aspect of our lives on a daily basis, important aspects of our lives will fall by the wayside.
To get back on track, examine each aspect of your life to determine where your needs are being met and which aspects are being neglected. Zig Ziglar's Wheel of Life is a great resource to look at in order to do this.
Ziglar's Wheel of Life divides life into seven major sections:

Those who focus on and maintain balance in each of the areas will be able to live a much happier life than those who focus on one area while ignoring others.
Examine each section of the wheel and ask yourself, “Where am I not paying close enough attention?” Which areas do I need to work on, and which do I excel at?
As previously stated in the article, awareness breeds action, and becoming aware of the areas in which you are slacking will assist you in repairing your life.
4. Create a Basic Needs Outline
With a better understanding of where you could be doing better in life, it is time to create a basic outline of your requirements.
Begin by making a list of all of the areas that you identified as lacking. For example, if you discovered that you weren't devoting enough time to the physical and financial needs, begin by listing them and working your way through each of the needs that fall under the category.
Continue with the previous example and imagine you are truly falling behind in the physical section. Perhaps you haven't been to the gym in a while, and climbing the stairs seems impossible. Perhaps you've been experiencing unexplainable symptoms that are affecting your health but haven't visited a doctor.
Whatever it is that isn't getting the attention it deserves, go through each of these sections and figure out what you need in each one.
You are ready to move on to the next section once you have completed each section and created a comprehensive list of all of your needs.
5. Define These Needs and Turn Them Into Goals
You may have a list of requirements, but that is insufficient to get things moving.
You must first convert your needs into goals in order to turn them into action.
How do you go about doing that?
Simple! You must translate your needs into very specific, well-defined goals.
Assume that one of your goals is to get in better shape so that you can be more balanced in the physical section. That's fantastic! However, it isn't nearly defined enough to be something you can act on.
As a result, you must narrow down your requirements. Don't simply state that you want to be fit. Assume you want to achieve something, such as losing weight or improving your overall muscle definition.
You now have something to work towards by identifying what you require and converting it into a specific, measurable goal.
Work through each of your requirements and turn them into actionable objectives. Then, go over your list twice to see if you can narrow down your end goal in each area of your life.
If you can't turn it into a specific goal, it's likely you don't want or need it as much as you thought.
6. Take your goals and make a timetable for achieving them
With actionable goals, you now have something to use to change your life into the one you want to live. The only question is when you intend to achieve these objectives.
In the same way that a lack of specificity can lead to inaction, goals without timelines can lead to you sitting around and waiting for the “right time” to get from point A to point B.
Setting realistic timelines is the key to achieving your goals the right way. For example, you will not be able to lose 30 pounds in a week, and setting such a goal will not only set you up for failure, but will also discourage you from trying at all.
Make certain that your timeline is in your favor. Instead of attempting to lose 30 pounds in a week, try to set a three-month timeline to achieve this goal. This will make it easier to chart your progress and ensure that you are successful by the time your deadline arrives.
7. Divide Your Objectives Into Small, Achievable Steps
Another useful tip for getting closer to your ideal life is to divide your objectives into small, manageable steps. This will be simple for you to accomplish because you already have specific, measurable goals.
Some goals may appear to be too large to tackle, and if you attempt to pursue these large goals and produce little output, it is easy to abandon your goal and return to your old habits.
However, when you have small, attainable steps, you can actually see your progress as you complete these mini goal milestones. This incremental progress toward your goal will help you build confidence and keep you on track.
Consider the following scenario: you want to start your own business. Rather than making a comprehensive list of everything that needs to be done and then attempting to tackle it all at once, organize all of these steps in an easy-to-follow order and then tackle it one step at a time.
This method is not only better for your confidence, but it is also a simpler, more effective way to achieve your objectives.
8. Make a concerted effort to work toward your goals every day
Some goals are long-term and cannot be broken down into steps that are immediately attainable or workable on a daily basis. When this happens, even if we want to achieve the goal, it tends to take a back seat as you work on other objectives. These objectives are frequently forgotten until you are reminded that you are no closer to achieving them.
Even if you are unable to translate your ultimate goal into smaller goals, it is critical that you make an effort to work toward your goals every day.
Do something every day to keep yourself on track, whether it's engaging in activities that are loosely related to your goal and will help you reach it, or gradually working towards sub-goals that will take a while to achieve on their own.
If you never stop working on it, it will remain a priority until it is finished.
9. Maintain a Journal to Track Your Progress
If you've ever worked towards a goal, you've probably gone through the motions only to feel as if you haven't made any real progress when, in fact, you have.
It can be difficult to determine how much progress you have made on a goal if you have no way of measuring it. In situations like these, having a tool like a journal can be beneficial.
You can use a journal to write down your main goal, sub-goals, and checkboxes or other completion sections next to each sub-goal. As you go through the process of completing each step toward your goal, you can mark them off in whatever way you want so that you can see yourself completing each of your to-dos.
Even better, next to each of your sub-goals, write down what you completed, how it made you feel, and how much you accomplished during that time period.
If you become discouraged along the way, you can refer back to your journal to see how many sub-goals you've completed and how much you've already accomplished.
If you don't like journaling, you can always use other mediums to achieve the same effect, such as simple to-do lists or a blank document on your computer.
10. Put in place preventive measures to keep you motivated throughout the process
Motivating yourself to get things done is, by far, the most difficult aspect of goal-setting and achievement. No matter how badly you want something, you'll never get it if you don't have the drive to do what you say you're going to do.
To completely avoid this issue and ensure that you make as much progress as possible with as few setbacks as possible, you will need to put in place preventative measures that will keep you motivated even when you don't feel like doing much at all.
Putting your goals online for all to see, or sharing them with close friends and family, could be one such preventative measure. What makes this work? The answer can be summed up in a single word: accountability.
When you state your goals and then fail to follow through on them, it can be humiliating to know that everyone you told about your plan and goals can see that you failed in your mission.
Telling others holds you accountable and provides you with additional motivation to complete your goal so that you do not disappoint the people around you who are aware of what you are attempting to accomplish.
On the other end of the spectrum, you can reward yourself for engaging in behaviors that assist you in completing your sub-goals successfully.
According to one article published on the website of the American Psychological Association, one of the best motivational methods for learning is rewards. By rewarding yourself for completing tasks that help you work towards your end goals, you can begin to associate success with rewards and rewire yourself so that you are focused on your goals and doing your best to achieve them.
While these are just two examples of systems you can use to keep your motivation alive and burning, anything that keeps the drive to succeed alive will suffice.
11. Discover a Way to Be Satisfied With Your Current Situation
Feeling uninspired and stuck in your current situation is more than just a sign that something needs to change. It's also a sign that you should start looking for the good in your current situation.
While setting goals is essential for moving forward in life, the unfortunate aspect of change is that it takes time. That means that those who are dissatisfied with their current situation will remain so until something changes.
Fortunately, you do not have to remain unhappy. All you have to do is change your perspective and look for ways to make your day more enjoyable. Enjoy more of what makes you happy and make time for yourself while you work toward your goals and live your current life.
It will not be easy, but you can at least enjoy the ride until you arrive at your destination.
12. Every day, write down three things you are grateful for
Continuing from the previous point, one way to make the present more enjoyable is to begin identifying what you are grateful for in your life.
Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami and Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis conducted a study on the effects of gratitude by dividing the participants into three groups.
The first group was instructed to write about events that occurred during the week for which they were grateful, while the second and third groups were instructed to write about things that irritated them during the week and how it affected them, respectively.
Following the study's conclusion, it was discovered that those who wrote about the events for which they were grateful were more optimistic about their lives and made better life choices.
While you could certainly follow this model, you could also do something as simple as writing down three things you're grateful for every day, which is a popular method these days. You will begin to notice the change over time, which will greatly assist you as you seek to make changes in your life.
13. Look for people with whom you can grow
Negativity breeds negativity, and who you choose to hang out with could be the source of your boredom and apathy.
Are your friends generally pessimistic and passing that on to you? Are they looking for growth and change, or are they complaining about where they are and then failing to take the necessary steps to bring about the change they desire?
More importantly, do you engage in this behavior?
If you are, or even if you are not, attempting to effect change in this environment is a losing battle.
You will have a much easier time growing and evolving if you surround yourself with people who are doing the same and who encourage you along the way.
Don't be concerned if your friends react negatively when you decide to change your life. It will quickly reveal who has always been there for you and who wants to keep you down.
