1. You've developed a habit of rushing ahead

Rushing through tasks or delivering subpar results in tension and anxiety, which leads to even more stress. Rushing ahead and prioritizing quantity over quality adds to the stress. A frantic outlook will spread to those around you, and your productivity will suffer as a result. Living and working on autopilot will not serve you well and is a common way for many people to continue to do everything incorrectly.

We all require downtime. Treating ourselves like machines and expecting us to be constantly on, ready to produce, perform, and please will only encourage us to keep doing everything wrong. Thinking you know how things will turn out, or expecting one outcome over all others, will keep you doing everything wrong. As I've gotten older, I've realized that life is constantly testing what I expect and demand of it. Life is unpredictable and full of plot twists.

In a TED talk, writer Kathryn Schulz points out that we frequently rely on an internal guide to rightness that is often out of touch with our external world. We become stuck, realize we are doing things incorrectly, and begin to believe that we are the source of the problem. We must acknowledge our fallibility while also stepping outside of it. We must stop overreacting to our failures, and when we let go of what is supposed to be, we will encounter what will truly be.

5. You've started to rely on fear and have lost your curiosity

Making goals and plans for your life based on your fears or expectations is a slow and painful death. It's one of the reasons we make mistakes. A life devoid of curiosity will quickly become stagnant and monotonous. You've compared yourself to others, attempted to live someone else's dream, or become apathetic and withdrawn into your shell. You don't want to know anything else, and you certainly don't want to feel anything else. Every one of us has been there.

7. Practicing has devolved into yet another tedious chore

Practice makes perfect. Nobody is without flaws. Perfection can be an elusive goal that you spend your entire life pursuing. Practicing a skill or learning to code a new computer language necessitates diligence, time set aside for mastery, and a focus on the quality of the work rather than perfection.

If you believe that you will fail anyway, or that it is too difficult to become a master or even proficient at something, you have already decided not to begin. If you are committing to a practice in which you have no interest, you should consider why you chose it in the first place.

Find another skill or hobby that was your intention if it was truly not of your own volition. Everyone can tell when you don't like what you're doing. When you're frowning in disgust, you're not going to be successful at anything. You will be dissatisfied as well. Doing everything poorly is a pattern that can be broken by substituting tried and true authenticity for poor productivity and action for the sake of action.
